Personal Narrative: My First Time At Job Corps

Improved Essays
The first time I heard about Job Corps was around December 2016. It was around my birthday; I had just turned 17. At that time, I wasn’t in school because I just got expelled for the second time. I didn’t feel like being put in that type of environment around other people that caused trouble because that would only get me in more trouble. So around that time is when my mom suggested I try Job Corps and this was the first time I ever heard about this program. When I heard about the trades they had and how they would help me get my diploma, and drivers’ license, it almost sounded too good to be true. I decided

Job Corps provides at-risk youth with the opportunity to receive Youth Discretionary Grants, Apprenticeship, and Youth Formula-Funded Grant Programs. Youth Discretionary Grants are aimed at specific populations of at-risk youth, such as young offenders, youth living in high-poverty areas, and foster youth, while Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Job Corps supports all their students not just the top achievers but every student, unlike in a traditional school anyone who fell behind was left behind normally that’s how it worked with some teachers and schools. I like Job Corps because it doesn’t leave anyone behind the staff there works hard with students to keep them focused on their goals and helps them in getting to the finish line for graduation. Before even attending Job Corps I had my doubts about the program, it was my father who pushed me into going and convinced me to enroll into the program. Since being there it has revealed the hidden potential in me and others who also strove to accomplish something. I will never forget the time spent there or the experiences that I learned from attending the program.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

At this school is where I made new friends, great memories, and where I grew up from a little kid into a young adult.…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…
