Personal Narrative: My First Soccer Career

Improved Essays
I’m five years old and in my first ever soccer game. Everything is going great, my parents are on the sidelines cheering me on and I’m having a blast. This is the first sport that has captured my attention and I’m overjoyed. Then it happens. The ball is kicked and I’m in the way; it hits me square in the face. While my mother jumps to save me my father gently reminds her that soccer’s a contact sport. I stand there stunned for what seems like forever, before running off crying to my mom. It definitely wasn’t the perfect start to my soccer career. Although I don’t remember every minute of that game, I do remember the feeling when I got the ball and started dribbling. I had tried other sports and couldn’t get into the groove of

Even though it seems that I’m trying to laugh off the situation, I’m using humor to cope with how much this situation affected me because soccer really meant a lot to me. Playing soccer is one of the ways where I can be myself and feel truly happy and free. When I play I always know that I have a team that I can rely on to support me and they know that they can rely on me as a striker to provide hope when we’re losing and confidence when we’re winning by scoring goals. Soccer for me was a constant so having it taken away in a few seconds when it took 15 years to build the stability and skill was like a bullet to the…

“Beep Beep Beep” It is 5 am and my hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in my head start telling me that it is too early and too dark to get up. But I did not ask for their opinion, I rise like a phoenix and before I know it, I am drenched in sweat and walking out an empty gym in route to the soccer field. Why you ask because I was told I was not good enough, too uncoordinated, and too tall to play soccer and I was on a mission to prove them wrong. There was a month left before the traveling soccer team that everyone told me I was not good enough to play for came back to town for their yearly tryouts.…

Moments later I steal the ball and I make goal after goal. Trying to intimidate our team the Ramstien Lions started to curse us out and call us mean names. I finally snapped and I took first swing to the biggest kid on the other team. He went berserk, tied me up on the soccer goal and started to use me as a punching bag. It took ten refs and three parents…

The next day, we had another soccer game in the morning and I wanted to play, but, a parent on our team is a nurse and she told my mom that I needed to sit out and go to the doctor Monday because she thought I had a concussion. Monday came, and I went to the doctor and they told me I had a terrible concussion and should go to the hospital to see if my skull was cracked. Needless to say, the doctors found nothing wrong but a terrible concussion, and they told me I had the choice to quit soccer or keep playing and become affected by the concussion in 10 years, so, I made the hardest decision I’ve ever made; I quit the game I fell in love with at just 5 years…

I had to ask myself if I was really willing to put this much time and effort into something where the outcome WAS UNCERTAIN AT BEST. After thinking about it and remembering how much I enjoyed playing, I decided to commit 100 percent to trying to secure a spot on the team. After all, I had been missing soccer since I WAS on my EIGHTH grade school team. At the first open field, that uncomfortable feeling came back.…

The second the ball crashed into my face, I immediately thought back when I was sitting on the bleachers for soccer tryouts. I was convinced that joining soccer was going to be a huge mistake. The timer marked 5 minutes until the game was over and I dreaded getting into my dad's car because I was sure he had seen everything. I felt very embarrassed, it was almost as if I could hear my dad laughing, while getting prepared to tell my mom and my brothers what he just…

Without soccer, I would not know how to tell my story. I didn't have much free time for soccer teams when I was young because I had to take care of my 5 younger brothers when my mom wasnt home. But in sixth grade our neighborhood was full of Latinos that loved soccer, so that is how I started to become more passionate about it. Our neighborhood did not have a nice field. It didn't have goals or markings, it was pretty much dirt and grass.…

Throughout my short life journey, soccer has been an enormous part of my life. I began playing soccer at a young age; this is the point in my life when I fell in love with the sport. As I grew older soccer became less of a hobby, and more of a lifestyle. Today, I am literate in the sport of soccer, because I have proficient skills, and a firm understanding of the game. I consider myself very soccer savvy, however the most important literacies I have acquired from soccer were the life skills of hard work, dedication and perseverance.…

The roar of the engine sends my heart racing as I pull out on to the track, one lap around and we are off, trucks at my side as we glide around the turns. The slick dirt pulling my back end around I move my hands, my automatic controls, the only thing keeping me from spinning out. It’s funny really because clichés aren’t my thing, however, at times idioms are just the thing to describe a situation or time period in one’s life, for instance the saying that “life is a roller coaster” couldn’t be more fitting for my life. The ups and downs, the highs and the lows, the twists and turns, life is just one big adrenaline rush and at times I feel I’m a junking, addicted to life.…

The effect this single kick of a ball, something I’ve done since the age of three, was one that would cause a terrible experience. Nothing could compare to the experience that was on the horizon during that humid July afternoon. The heavy breathing and nerves were very apparent among my team as we limped off of the field. We had just finished one-hundred and twenty minutes of hard-fought soccer in the blistering heat of July.…
