Improved Essays
Throughout my first semester of college level English, there were various pieces of writing that I had to develop. A large range of them were opinionated, which is something I am not used to. In high school, teachers would tell the students exactly what type of essay to write and how to write it. High school papers were extremely concise in a way that a student was not allowed to think too far out of the box; ideas were stifled. This semester I was able to write essays on topics that I could relate to. Some topics included the Black Experience, which is something that every black person has to go through. Other topics involved our opinions on the memoir, The Beautiful Struggle, that the class had to read. At certain points, the class had to

"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence" I have had many ups and downs over the course of my life thus far. One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. When I started high school it was very challenging for me, partially due to the fact that; during this time, I was lazy, unmotivated and did not really take school seriously. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

My freshman year of college I struggled greatly with the cost of college. I had moved out of my mother’s house and was living with my grandmother. I worked a part time job of 15 hours while taking 19 hours of school. Because I did not have my own place I was still considered under my mother’s income. My mother does not make very much money.…

Last semester was definitely the hardest for me. I have two challenging research papers toward the end of the semester. I find it hard because I did not know what to write about and which assignments I should start on first. I manage to overcome this challenge by narrowing the topics and start on the paper that was closest to deadline. My stress level was at 10 because I skip meals and stayed up all night long to finish my papers.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

We all have difficult journeys to go through, but how you handle them reveals who you truly are. As I have moved in literacy, I have faced some struggles, such as failing my standardized test and failing my English class. I have never been a good writer, which I know that, but I also have improved over the years. I have never tried to be a literate person, but when I entered my senior year I knew I had to do something different. When I read these passages, I thought about the odds that these people faced and how they never gave up.…

One of the things that has significantly influenced my development was my Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class my junior year in high school. The class was taught by a phenomenal teacher, Mrs. Shaw, who made it virtually impossible for a student to fail the class because of her extreme dedication and amazing teaching. The class made me realize my potential as a writer. At one moment, it was a chore, something that I dreaded doing more than I dreaded washing dishes after Thanksgiving dinner. But after I completed the class, writing became something I actually looked forward to doing.…

When entering this English 101 course, I did not know what to expect. I knew the course was going to be a lot of writing and work, but I would be able to get through it. A nervousness did fall over me while I started my first writing assignment. I knew I had a lot of improvement to do when it came to writing essays. I soon realized that college essays were nowhere near what someone would find in a high school setting.…

First year writing was by far the scariest class for me to attend in my first semester at college. As a typical Middle-Eastern Israeli student, a second language course is the last class they want to take. I came into college with a mathematical and scientific mindset, and when my academic advisor informed me that I had to take an English course I could have sworn my heart sank a little. Writing essay, letters, even emails has always been a tough obstacle for me, primarily because it has little to do with numbers.…
