Personal Narrative: My First Semester At Miami University

Improved Essays
The experience that I would use to display all of these personal qualities would be my first semester at Miami University. I chose this experience because it has taught me to become comfortable within the uncomfortable and create an environment where I am able to adapt quickly to my surroundings. My first semester at college has made me become more independent, willing to push outside of my comfort zones, open-minded, and able to persevere through isolation.
Throughout my first semester at Miami University, I’ve learned to become more independent, through most of the daily responsibilities that I hold. My independence at school began when I learned that I needed some of the things my mom would purchase for me, like medication and school supplies. The independence of living on my own and being

I have learned about others’ experiences and how those experiences have changed them to become better and to think about different topics throughout the world. I have learned to be open-minded to what is happening now but also being open-minded to all opportunities. Through some of my experiences on campus, I have become more open-minded through discussing current events and have learned to develop my pre-conceived notions of a certain individual judging them based on their actions rather than what they appear to be.
As someone who is an introvert, being isolated isn’t a big deal but at my time in college, I have become increasingly comfortable with doing things by myself and traveling places I am unfamiliar with. Being in college has helped me become more comfortable being alone and in isolation, especially living ten hours from home. The distance from my home and my area of comfort in Maryland has let me know how to deal with the isolation and homesickness that I feel on campus some days. But talking to my family has helped with the transition of being far from home and everything that I’m familiar

My first week of high school was pretty good. I like all of my teachers, and my classes are in a good order. It was difficult waking up early on the first day because prior to then, the earliest I had woken up during the summer was 8:00. I got lost going to FACS on the first day, and then again on the second day. I found my regular classes easily enough, and I haven’t gotten any tardies.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Last semester was definitely the hardest for me. I have two challenging research papers toward the end of the semester. I find it hard because I did not know what to write about and which assignments I should start on first. I manage to overcome this challenge by narrowing the topics and start on the paper that was closest to deadline. My stress level was at 10 because I skip meals and stayed up all night long to finish my papers.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

In this class, I have connected it to my personal life as well as my academic life. My first-year experiences have taught me a lot about myself and my perceptions of others around me. I learned about what is important to me and how to get involved around campus so I can get to know others who are not in my class. I feel like a completely different person than when I started college because I have a different perception than I did when I started. While attending Florida State University for the past 3 years, I have managed to conquer a handful of classes. Throughout lectures, labs, and long nights studying, I have always contemplated whether or not this information is going to beneficial to me in the “Real World”. As daunting as the “Real World” seemed to be in the past, it no longer seems to be such a scary place due to the knowledge I have gained from my time in the classroom as well as the time I spent interning at Mad Men Marketing this summer. Yes, there are a lot of classes that are required as prerequisites that in no way, shape, or form correlated to the skills needed to understand and complete various tasks at my internship, but at the same time I firmly believe that having some background in a variety of subjects is crucial in understanding the world and becoming a well rounded intellectual. As my junior year of college came to a close this…
