Personal Narrative: My First Semester At Jefferson College

Improved Essays
My first semester at Jefferson College has been a very positive experience. It is different than I originally expected. Originally, I thought that it would be incredibly difficult; now that it’s almost over however, my first semester has been comparable to my Senior year of high school. I do believe that I’ve grown into a more independent student. The resources, my Intro to College class, and other experiences have helped me improve through this semester. The resources available at Jefferson College have been very helpful so far. The testing center allowed me to retake a test when I needed to, and the library provided me with a nice, quiet area to work. I also used the computers available in the library to check emails, schedules, and print

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence" I have had many ups and downs over the course of my life thus far. One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. When I started high school it was very challenging for me, partially due to the fact that; during this time, I was lazy, unmotivated and did not really take school seriously. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

As a first time student attending Spokane Falls Community College, I honestly thought that the only buildings and areas of campus involving my class schedule would be of importance. Little did I know that one room I would encounter would become my safe haven. I remember the first day stepping out onto campus and all I saw was a giant riddle waiting to be solved so many parking spaces, buildings, rooms, classes, and students. The anticipation bubbling up inside of me was exciting and rooted with a little nervousness. I was searching for place to keep me focused on my goal of being a successful student, a place to refresh between rigorous lectures.…

I take night classes because I work during the day, and after a long day at Glendale Community College all I want to do is jump into my bed and fall asleep as quickly as possible, but my annoying little sister whom I share my room with snores like there’s no tomorrow. We’ve all heard college students never get sufficient sleep, and I being a full time college student need that sleep.…

Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

I can say, undoubtedly, that my first year at The University of Alabama was one which taught me a great deal about myself. As an out-of-state student from Rhode Island, the transition from a relatively small high school to a large university was unmatched to anything in my life prior. While Freshman year naturally contained points of difficulty, I was able to overcome these obstacles and become more well rounded as a result. Upon graduation from Alabama, I hope to enroll in medical school where I wish to eventually pursue emergency medicine. Although I was initially uncertain of my academic abilities in such a distinctly new environment, I have since grown more confident of my competency at the University.…

The end of the day comes whether you have gotten up to do something productive or if you have simply remained inanimate while time moves around you. I have found that the present slips away while you are worrying about the future. We are constantly telling ourselves that if we just get through this, then everything after will be better. We forget to appreciate the moment while constantly reaching for a hypothetically more fulfilling life. Once we graduate high school, or get through a challenging class, or finish a workout, everything after will get easier.…

Beginning of situation: I became pregnant in 2011 and had a son born in November the same year. I began attending Junior Joliet College (JCC) in the Fall semester of January/2012. I was enrolled in five college classes and did not anticipate the abundant amount of study hours and the new educational culture a junior college offered at the time. Needless to say, I did not prepare much for this new endeavor but only envisioned myself completing all the classes I signed up for. I was still excited and determined as a carefree young lady who just had a baby, yet, not having the experience of managing my time and setting my priorities in order.…

Apart from the stunning facilities, I took notice of the open curriculum and strong alumni network and decided I liked Hamilton. In High School I would of never imagined me attending Southern Adventist University. I honestly did not think that I would attend any school over about $6000 dollars anyway. The community college in my neighborhood is where i was expected to go. It was cheap enough to where i wouldn’t have to pay a dime, close to home and nearly everyone i knew started of college there to save money. With my parents being from Haiti and not making enough money to support me in school community college was what i thought to be as the ideal school for me.…
