Life was pretty great, I had two brothers, Jake and Will, as you guys know, and of course my parents Mary Alyce and Bobby. I went to Wolf Hill school which is where I met my friends, including Vaughn. When I was younger I would switch off who I would play with most, I started doing things with Jake and he taught me lots of stuff. Then when Jake started hanging out with his older friends I was forced to hangout with Will, which meant I had to teach him things that would help him, so I did, just like Jake.…
For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…
As a first time student attending Spokane Falls Community College, I honestly thought that the only buildings and areas of campus involving my class schedule would be of importance. Little did I know that one room I would encounter would become my safe haven. I remember the first day stepping out onto campus and all I saw was a giant riddle waiting to be solved so many parking spaces, buildings, rooms, classes, and students. The anticipation bubbling up inside of me was exciting and rooted with a little nervousness. I was searching for place to keep me focused on my goal of being a successful student, a place to refresh between rigorous lectures.…
Being the first in the family to take interest in college is already enough for everyone to push me in the direction to achieving it. I do not want to disappoint them or myself, I want to be on the graduation stage with my hand grasping that master degree. About me, others describe me as opinioned, stubborn and independent. Although I do not want to admit it, these traits all apply to me. Opinioned doesn’t sound as an appealing word to me I should say I like for people to understand my views completely also I don’t mind if someone does not agree with me, it just adds more depth to the discussion.…
Some challenges I’ve had to overcome start with me needing to get my life fixed. I used to be the student in high school that didn’t care about how they looked or what grades they got. I had no self-confidence in who I was and I had no aspirations on what I wanted to do with my life. Once high school was over life hit me and I needed to stop being the person I was because it was getting me nowhere in life. Now that I changed my attitude and my lifestyle I now get good grades and I finally feel that I have a clear future for…
After my mom got divorced we moved out of Alaska, where I was born, and lived in a lot of different places and states, most of them I am too young to remember, and moving in with my aunt and various other family members. Finally we moved to Ohio when I was in 5th grade and set up a permite home, where I meet my 3 best friends. I was hesitant to get attached but they were such characters that there was no way I couldn’t. Zero was the first people I meet and the first time I saw him he was crawling into my window while I was crying, after being yelled at by some horribly rude people at my school, and just announced that I shouldn’t listen to those meanies and we watched movies and shows the rest of the night, to this day I have no idea why he went through the window and didn 't just introduce himself through the front door, and we were friends ever since. The next was Derek who I meet when he got all beaten up and bloody kicking the crap out of bullies that were making fun of me.…
Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…
The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…
When I interviewed with Mount Holyoke College, the Associate Director of the Frances Perkins Scholar program, Nichole Reynolds, shared with me, “Attending this school can be a transformative experience if you allow it to be.” The words that she spoke were the guiding force behind the ways in which I approached my junior year. The 2016-2017 school year has been the most transformative year of my academic life thus far. Indeed, I stepped out of my cocoon and forced myself to stretch; no matter how uncomfortable or the amount of fear that I felt, I pushed towards new experiences that helped to construct the person I was becoming. First, after much consideration, I officially declared my self-design major in Black Geographies with the support of my academic advising team.…
My community college experience. It is very important to be involved with others in community college, it’s called community college so make sure to interact with others in that community. Joanne Jacobs reports in an article interviewing Isa Adney “The secret to success is people, Adney writes. Talk to classmates. Form study groups.…
Going into my first year of college I had plans of being healthy. My older siblings were for sure I would get the freshman 15 just as they did when they were in college. Many freshman give in to their temptations the first year because they don’t have their parents with them to judge them. Why did I decide to live healthier? I wanted to avoid the freshman 15 and to avoid I had changed my eating habits, become more active, and wanted to become healthy mentally as well.…
After having completed my first semester at college I can honestly my attitudes and perspective on college itself have drastically changed. Not only have I learned how different my ideas on schooling and the physical work that accompanies said schooling, but I have been able to make many self-realizations about myself as well. I have been able to make numerous amounts of parallels to myself in high school that I thought would change or that I at least hoped to change for the better. For me, my first semester at college really wasn’t about the grades or focusing on my schooling with all my heart. I still gave a decent amount of effort towards all my schooling as it was still important to me, but my true focus was to branch out and, in a way,…
Wednesday August 31st, started the first day of my college adventure as a first year student at Manchester University. I never imagined being where I am today, at college and being successful by learning new formulas, equations, writing techniques and having the ability to be hands on in my Chemistry lab. I have certainly enjoyed what I am learning here on campus along with having the ability to meet new people but one college course this semester that has stuck out to me Is English 103 First Year Seminar Writing Lab. Coming into college, I was not prepared for all these crazy long essays I would be conducting along the way. With the outstanding sources and techniques provided in English 103 First Year Seminar Writing Lab I have been able to…
After that on a regular basis we would chill with each other on our free time. For one second of my life I felt like I had a bigger brother I could depend on, even though I have a older brother named sheaquan. Sheauquan wouldn’t never go out his way for me, but kenneth…
