Personal Narrative: My First Pair Of Ballet Shoes

As it’s said, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Meaning everyone has their own object that is important to them, even if others do not see the significance. Something that is incredibly important to me is my first pair of ballet shoes. They started as a perfect, ballet pink, shoe made of soft leather. After, they became dirty, with blackened spots from all the wear. They were obviously bought for me by my parents who signed me up in classes based on my mom’s love for dance when she was growing up. I loved them, I was so excited about dance and getting to see my friends and teachers every week. Graduating into my next pair of soft leather ballet shoes was still exciting, and to go on from there into split sole and the canvas, and even onto other dance shoes, was all apart of the progression. However, that first pair of soft leather ballet shoes will be something I never forget. For the most obvious reason these are significant because they were the beginning of my journey with dance. This has been something I have been doing for about 15 years now, and I have never once looked back. These shoes started my journey into the activity that made me who I am today. There have been so many ups and downs throughout my years of dancing, but I have been taught through dance, and these shoes, to push through. There have been many injuries and times where everything about dance just seems too hard, but I have been taught that I can only come out of these troubles in dance, and even life, stronger. These tiny shoes have also been the reminder that even when everything tells me to give up, there is someone in the same position that I was in 15 years ago, beginning their journey, that looks at me and the other senior dancers as something they aspire to be.
