Personal Narrative: My First Mask

Improved Essays
The first mask I wore had a hole in each eye the size of a dime. I started with this one because I thought I would be able to work on an assignment because I still had half the use of both my eyes, but it was still difficult. The assignment I was working on involved reading a book and then typing out answers to questions that were found from the reading. This was difficult because I had to constantly be looking back and forth between the book and my computer but I did not have full use of my eyes so it was hard to read the book. I had to bring the book close to my eyes, so I could read well enough. After doing this for a while I started getting a headache so I decided to take a break from homework with the mask on because it required a lot …show more content…
This was kind of interesting because through what I was hearing I could envision what was going on, but I hated not being able to see what was actually going on. I had to rely on my hearing and my imagination. After trying to watch Netflix I just turned it off and lay in my bed. I felt lonely and like I couldn’t do anything myself because this mask was so restricting. I can’t imagine how some people feel with actual vision impairments. The last mask I put on the right eye was compactly covered but I could see complete out of my left eye. I tried once again to do homework and it was a lot better. It was still frustrating because I had to completely turn my head to look at my book and I couldn’t see anything on the right side of me unless I turned my head completely. With full vision in my left eye I was able to finish my homework assignment. From this experience I learned that it must take a lot of adjustments for a visually impaired person to function. I can see how it could be frustrating, scary, and lonely. From this assignment I am so much more thankful for my vision and more aware of those who might have these visual impairments in their

And as time went on, I kept many and disregarded even more. In many cases, wearing certain masks allowed social domains to open that were previously unknown to me at the time. For example, for a long time I attended theater classes, believing that acting would allow me to overcome social anxieties and express creativity. I would later disregard this as I was never comfortable acting in front of people. But what wearing this mask allowed was the opportunity to enter into Technical Theater classes.…

My eye was swollen shut, but at least I didn't have to face surgical procedure, and I am able to leave with an ice pack for my eye. Weeks later, I was finally able to open my eye, and the eye was completely red due to all of the blood vessels in my eye being popped. I found out that my vision would never be the same, and I would always have a problem with depth perception. This problem still persists today, but I have learned to deal with it just as any other problem that any other person might have.
