It was a scorching summer afternoon around three o’ clock PM at J.D Redd Park. I was anxiously waiting in third base for the batter to approach the plate and smack the yarn covered ball just enough for me to make it to the home plate. As the sun hits my face I see the pitcher retract his right arm getting ready to throw it. As I see the ball leave the pitcher’s hand, I breathed in the humid air, making preparations to sprint as fast as I could and make it to the home plate. Before I could even gather my thoughts the ball departed from the pitcher’s hand and into the bat of one of the members of my team.…

It was so hard to believe that all of a sudden everything had changed. My no-good rifle had malfunctioned and shot me in the leg. I was taken to a hospital next to a local train station; the hospital was dark, gloomy, and had a prominent stench of death.…

Feeling like an outsider is something I do on a daily. Ever since I could remember I had always felt like I didn’t belong. Whether that was because I was taller than most kids my age, or I was always at least two years younger than all of my classmates. I had always felt different, almost as if I was supposed to be born in another time. The need to belong is one of the fundamental needs within all humanity as we all feel the need to "fit in".…

The personal fear that I have experienced almost losing my dad and brother through tragic events ignited by hatred demand my personal maturity and compassion.…
