Personal Narrative: My First Lego

I could hear the constant chatter of the teams solving problems, parents giving advice, and judges evaluating. Then, I picked it up and looked into its lifeless eyes as it looked back at me. “Let’s do this!” I said. As the judges approached, a nostalgic memory hit me…
...One rainy day, as the light pattering of rain on the windows complemented the rustling leaves of trees, there came a loud “Crash!". Startled and fearing the worst, my mother ran to the hallway to find the 4 year old me standing on a chair trying to reach the top of a ledge. With a sigh of relief, she took a closer look and saw the new Lego set my father had bought the day earlier.
That was my first Lego set, the one that kick started my interest in building objects from my young, wild imagination. My father, being a Mechanical Engineer was quite happy with my

We decided to create a simulation of a system of 3 robots that would mine ore from Jupiter’s moon – Europa. The Recon bot first scoured the area in search of “ores”, which were colored balls. The coordinates of the ores were transmitted to base, after which a map with the most efficient path was created for The Digger to follow. This bot would then excavate the ore and return it to the base. Finally, the Sorter bot sorted the ores according to the color.
Though we did not win, the competition was an eye opener. It taught me two important things – teamwork and leadership. I learnt to not only assign tasks to members but to also create a sense of coherence and harmony that would bring out the full potential of the team. Moreover, the competition debunked many of the impractical ideas that I had on building and programming the robots.
I plan on taking a double major and envision myself in a field involving both computer and mechanical knowledge such as artificial intelligence in robots. The Lego journey has played an important role in my life and it continues to drive my passion for

While it is necessary to delegate different tasks to team members, leaders also possess the responsibility of their team as a whole. While my Robotics team was revising our robot for the VEX Robotics Mid-Atlantic Championships, I made sure to keep track of the team’s progress in the engineering notebook, as well as supervise the work of my fellow team members. At Governor’s School, I will make sure to collaborate and contribute ideas, as well as provide leadership skills such as guidance, encouragement, and responsibility.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me. Although those experiences happened long before my story, none of them as clearly taught me the necessity of having a phone near me at all times.…

I had never considered being able to jump that high from solid ground, and the idea filled me with such wonder and excitement, I suddenly felt that my life would never be complete if I hadn't experienced what the laughing, joyous children on that screen were experiencing. So I couldn't believe it when she refused, especially since they were only $19.99! But my mother paused the TV and walked me through the purchasing process; It would not, in fact, cost $19.99 - The price was advertised as "Five easy payments of $19.99," so we did the math together, and realized that, in fact, the shoes would have cost almost $100. I began to think of how many Legos $100 would buy, and how many hours of fun I would get out of them, compared to the initial rush and eventual boredom I realized I would feel about the…

My Dual Enrollment English class and I recently finished reading your memoir, “The Glass Castle.” The story of your childhood surprised me. Growing up, your childhood was far from easy. You had to mature faster than anyone I know. You had to grow up fast, and it broke my heart. You did not have time to be a kid and participate in all the fun things that the other children did. You, along with your siblings, were self-sufficient. The difficulty of your childhood really did blow my mind.…

I am a member of PMHS's robotics team, Cyber Blue 234. We had 6 weeks to build a robot that that needed to effectively address this year's game challenge. When tackling this problem, we made a few costly assumptions. Because of this, failure was inevitable. Therefore we performed poorly at our first robotics competition. Greif, anguish, humiliation: these emotions ran through me and my team. Instead of giving up, we learned from our failure and used the experience as a motivator for improving our robot. Due to this adversity, I experienced and dealt with failure; moreover, I learned the importance of understanding a problem before tackling it.…

Growing up sucks. When you grow, so do your responsibilities, expectations, and general interests. That usually means that many of the wonderful things of childhood, don’t seem so wonderful anymore. The stuffed dog that used to help you sleep sits in a closet now, gathering dust. That blanket that you adored lays tattered in a garbage bag somewhere buried in a storage locker. Most of all, the toys you played with are now put away, most likely never to be used again. Of course, you don’t care. That creepy doll with those blinking eyes could be gone forever and you would probably be scared if you ever saw it again. But deep down there's that one toy we all wish we could play with again and not be looked upon as mentally ill. For me, that's Legos. Those fantastic little blocks of all shapes and sizes fueled my imagination as a young boy, and were by far the best toy ever created. Without Legos, my imagination would be lacking. Life would seem dull without them. I wouldn’t be the person I am now.…
