Personal Narrative: My First Lacrosse Team

Improved Essays
My life, in the last four years, has had ups and downs. One of my biggest setbacks was being let go from the lacrosse team my junior year of high school. Up until my junior year, I had played lacrosse for 10 extremely successful years. Growing up I was always one of the best elite lacrosse players in the state. As a result, I played for teams that represented Rhode Island and even New England. Lacrosse was something that came easily to me. The parts of the sport that did not come easy, I enjoyed working on to improve to ensure I stayed at the top of my game. The coach of my high school team also coached select youth teams. Consequently, I played for him on these select teams for 6 years before coming to La Salle Academy. With this said, being let go was completely surreal. Facing the rejection of not making the lacrosse team and feeling cheated out of the potential to play lacrosse in college, I knew there was no choice but to overcome this unfathomable obstacle. I knew I could not let this overcome and discourage me. …show more content…
He granted my request, but then warned me that the golf team can only take eight players. Therefore, it is one of the most difficult teams in the school to make. Although it seemed insurmountable, it did not deter me. After a long week of exhausting rounds of golf trying out for the team, I learned that I had earned a spot on the team. The coach told me that he was proud of my determination and that he looked forward to helping me further develop my skills. Through tenacity and sheer grit, I went from playing golf 2-3 times a year to making a select team at La Salle

It was like, it was only me and the golf course and another day at the office. Before we headed out Mr. Hill huddled us in a circle and gave us three seniors, Morgan, Gabby, and myself an emotional speech telling us, “No matter what, I just want you guys to have fun and even if you do bad, know that I know you tried your best.” Which made us burst into tears like the Niagra falls. I started off great and made my big numbers from yesterday small and my small numbers even smaller. Cutting to the chase, I defeated my girl by seven, giving me hope that we had a chance because I knew Morgan could get the other four strokes easily and Gabby could get one or two, and still have plenty of strokes left over.…

In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

The majority of my lacrosse career depended upon my natural talent. With little work, I could coast and still outclass the majority of my teammates. That is, I could until I was pushed onto varsity as a sophomore. Instead of getting the steady playing time I expected, I was only permitted to enter the game when things got out out hand. Frustrated, I asked my father what I could do to earn a reliable spot on the field, and he told me that if I augmented talent with practice and outworked the rest of my teammates, there would be no reason for Coach to keep me off the field.…

I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
