It was a warm, sunny day on September 28th. Today we, Laurel High School’s soccer team, were playing against one of our biggest rivals Northwestern. Last year in our regular season, we tied against them 2-2 and lost to them in the playoffs by penalties. This year we didn’t want to lose and we were determined on winning. We arrive at their home field which was the Old Fairmont Heights High School’s soccer field since Northwestern’s field was getting turf instead of grass.…

In elementary school, my mom brought me to my first Ole Miss soccer game. As the players warmed up, Hannah Weatherly, an All-American forward, inspected the Mississippi State players like a spider stalking its prey. As the referee’s lips touched the whistle to start the game, the players hustled as if their lives depended on it. Throughout the game, shots were fired; penalties were taken, and tackles were made. The fans throughout the game boasted, “Hotty Toddy!”…

We began to train even harder, disregarding the swelling on our knees and ankles, tasting the conviction and persistence in the training court shared by all. Meanwhile, I watched professional soccer games, read coaching books every night and observed the training of our rival team, and tried to think of a good strategy. My research drove me to play a direct counter attack style to win the games. In the final team meeting before the big game, I presented my strategy, and convinced them that every individual’s potential is indeed unlimited, especially when they focus on their goal and work together. If the whole team believed in each other and fight to the end, we could change a failure to a victory.…

Sweat, hard work, adrenaline. These are all things I felt in a special “moment in time” that I shared with my varsity soccer team. The team consists of many different players but the to name a couple: undefeated in the league and only lost one game so far. Our next game is against our rivals, Port Alleghany. This is where the story begins.…

While we was sitting in this little class room about to sweat to death we wait until our coaches tell us what to do. Everyone looked up to these coaches for some reason and I wanted to find out why. While we was sitting in this meeting talking about what we need for tryouts I started getting sick and thinking to myself who was going to make this team. I just wanted to make this team so bad and I…

It was the end of my sophomore soccer season on Junior Varsity. We didn't win a single game and got blown out by large margins game after game. It hurt me to leave the field on our last game with so little success in the entire season. I was deeply disappointed and wanted deep down to have more success . The next day, we had another soccer game in the morning and I wanted to play, but, a parent on our team is a nurse and she told my mom that I needed to sit out and go to the doctor Monday because she thought I had a concussion. Monday came, and I went to the doctor and they told me I had a terrible concussion and should go to the hospital to see if my skull was cracked. Needless to say, the doctors found nothing wrong but a terrible concussion, and they told me I had the choice to quit soccer or keep playing and become affected by the concussion in 10 years, so, I made the hardest decision I’ve ever made; I quit the game I fell in love with at just 5 years…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

The roar of the engine sends my heart racing as I pull out on to the track, one lap around and we are off, trucks at my side as we glide around the turns. The slick dirt pulling my back end around I move my hands, my automatic controls, the only thing keeping me from spinning out. It’s funny really because clichés aren’t my thing, however, at times idioms are just the thing to describe a situation or time period in one’s life, for instance the saying that “life is a roller coaster” couldn’t be more fitting for my life. The ups and downs, the highs and the lows, the twists and turns, life is just one big adrenaline rush and at times I feel I’m a junking, addicted to life.…

When I was in elementary school I played soccer and was fairly good at it too. I was a fast runner and great both at chasing the ball and occasionally tricking the other team by kicking it backwards. I lost interest in soccer after a while, only wanting to attend the games instead of practices, and stopped playing. Years later, I attempted to pick it up again.…

Soccer was one of my first loves in life, so when I was given the opportunity to pass this love on to someone else I jumped at the chance. During the spring soccer season of 2016 I was given the opportunity to coach a competitive U12 girls soccer team. The team consisted of fifteen girls between the ages of ten to twelve. I’ve played soccer for eleven years; in the past, I coached two recreational soccer teams. I figured I was up for the challenge of coaching a competitive soccer team.…
