In speaking with Lee alumni from 1985, Lee University was known as Lee College and the codes of conduct were much more stringent under the guidelines of the Church of God. With the acceptance as a Federally funded university, Lee had to conform to the requirements held by the State of Tennessee. This was done after much prayer and decision making, yet by adopting the current policies, Lee could further the spreading of the gospel. Back then, there was mandatory dress codes, zero tolerance for unchristian behavior, and an underlying fear amongst all students that these behaviors would be severely dealt with.…

As my time at Rockhurst comes to a close, I have realized that the most important lessons that I have learned has been how to be a well-rounded young man. Since my first day, I have heard that the charge of the Jesuit schools, going back to St. Ignatius of Loyola, is to create “men and women for others” and to instill the ideals of the “grad at grad” repeated countless times. While I did not know what those sayings meant at the time, I now know that Rockhurst has prepared me to be a leader and young man as I start the next chapter of my life. Being a man for others means that I need to put the needs of others and the community in front of my own in context with the five characteristics of the grad at grad.…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

Sitting at the end of the pew, with the communion being passed around, I had little time to debate whether or not I should ingest this metaphor. Receiving communion used to be a normal ritual that I would go through almost every Sunday. It took my free time on Sundays to earn the ability of taking communion, through Sunday schooling and being baptised. But as the tray of grape juice and crackers advanced closer in my direction, the ritual became more foreign to me than ever. It wasn’t until recently that I was confronted with a belief that I have had for as long as I can remember.…
