Personal Narrative: My First Jazz Concert

Improved Essays
On Wednesday, April 19th at 8:00 at Rowan University, I attended my first Jazz concert! It was quite an interesting experience. If I am being honest, I went into it thinking I would not enjoy myself, but I left the concert having a great time. The concert had 9 men and between those men there were 8 different instruments. The 8 instruments that were used were: the guitar, baritone saxophone, saxophone, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, and trombone. During this concert, there were 7 songs played that were written originally by well-known Jazz artists. I was amazed during this concert how well 3 or 4 different instruments sounded in such perfect harmony together. I was very glad that the performers who were playing the instruments were so into the songs. It made the …show more content…
The dynamic of this song was quite loud for most of the piece. If I am being completely honest, I thought this song was very unorganized. In fact, I wrote down in my notes, “This does not even sound like the same song”. That does not mean it was not a good song, because I thought it was great! It just seemed like the notes were not consistent throughout the song. Although, I do think that was the point of the song. The notes not being consistent would be considered a rhythm change. Although, the way the song started, was the same way it had ended. Each song from there on out, besides one, "The Very Thought of You", all had a loud dynamic. I genuinely had a difficult time finding meter in songs, as it can be hard to catch. Although, one song I was able to figure out, “It Could Happen To you” by Jimmy Van Heusen. I looked up the term of 4 beats and it can be called common time which was the meter in this song. One song that only consisted of two instruments, the drums, and the baritone saxophone, was “Sophisticated Lady” by Duke Ellington. Throughout that song, the baritone saxophone held the melody of the song. The drums were more of a background

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

Finally, I can say that experiencing this type of Jazz concert, where it is more of a casual, lounge atmosphere was very interesting due to the fact that the first Jazz concert I attended was in a more professional setting. It was a lot more obvious to me how Jazz does live in the moment, since the band actually did a whole improvised piece and was randomly deciding what they were going to play next. The connection between the band members was also very evident, they had a lot of eye contact and head signals. Last but not least, I am excited about the fact that this jazz session incorporated certain elements of Jazz that we have recently covered in class. For example, the train influence on music pieces.…

The introduction of the song had strings and the main instrument was the celesta with the staccato. Then there was a short section where the strings and the woodwinds went back and forth between each other. The main theme of the instruments was the celesta, accompanied by string instruments. The meter of the song was 2/4 and the rhythm was off beat from the string instruments. The final work was Trepak, it is a very lively song and as the tempo accelerates the dynamic increases also.…

Second was Lucky Southern on trumpet, a surprisingly uninteresting piece, even while it was being played. Next was Here’s that Rainy Day, the first trombone piece, which had a slight tropical feel to it, a rhythm & melody that commanded attention, and was apparently the theme for an old TV show as well. Milestones featured the trumpet and trombone, the two taking turns playing an ostinato melody before getting a little more competitive and playing together. Satin Doll was fifth, featuring both instruments, although the focus was on the trombone. When Sunny Gets Blue was next, a piece that featured the guitar playing a slow and sad melody, with a laid back rhythm.…

The first Broadway musical I enjoyed was Disney's Beauty and the Beast. I was about thirteen years old. It was more elaborate than the small performances at Disney World. There was more music, elaborate set designs, and more seats in theater. I was very impressed by the singing and actors ability to flow through the material.…

As the concert proceeded I realized that the music was enjoyable and easy to follow for the most part. I don’t classify myself as a very knowledgeable person about jazz, but with this experience, I can at least say that I have been to a concert and know what to expect if I ever go to one again. To anyone who really enjoys this music, I would definitely recommend going! I’m sure that every jazz concert is different, so there could be benefits such as the band or conductor being more interactive with the audience or the audience itself could create a different feeling for people attending the concert. I did enjoy the concert, especially being able to see and learn about such a great artist like Stuart Mack.…

Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. This essay will demonstrate the analysis of my musical identity based on my life.…

I first gained an interest in music in elementary school music class. After playing recorders and learning about the history of music, I was inspired to learn as many different instruments as possible. I began piano lessons in third grade, and started learning cornet a year later. After many years of attending music camps, playing in school and church bands, joining marching band and drumline, and experimenting on my own, I have grown immensely as a musician. My main instruments are trumpet/cornet, piano, marimba, and ukulele.…
