I have always been the one in charge and make the calls at work and now I was officially “the new girl”. Many thoughts ran through my head as I entered: “Will the employees be friendly and helpful? Will I be in everyone’s way? What kind of pharmaceutical knowledge do the employees expect for me to know? “I arrived 25 minutes early and saw a technician and the pharmacist inside already at work. They greeted me with welcoming smiles that relieved some of my fears. Brenda, one of the technicians, asked if this had been my first time in a pharmacy and I replied yes. Brenda then proceeded to introduce me to the pharmacist and give me a quick tour of the stock. My heart began to race again. I wanted to ask a thousand questions but was afraid I would sound uninformed. I was taught how to use the scanner, register and the computer. The staff remembered their patients’ names, kids, spouses, and even their jobs sometimes. This environment reminded me of myself and my customers while working as a manager at McDonald’s. The Walmart staff interacted with one another and patients as we did at McDonald’s. We tend to develop a bond with our more frequent customers and treat them like family. The store did not have a very high volume of patients coming in but maintained a constant flow. There was an assembly of patients ranging from all ages, genders, and ethnicities, with a mode of ages in the sixties. Unfortunately, I did not interact with many patients, but 3 that I did have the pleasure of interacting with were very pleasant. I recognized that the patients only reflected the persona the staff presented, which was a smile expressing genuine love for what they do. There were times we did receive irate patients and the employees maintained that same persona of caring and understanding with the patient. Professionalism is the utmost important factor in field when dealing with people, especially face to face. An example of where the professionalism used was during a conflict with the HIPPA Law. The patient called and stated that she was going to sue the company and employees for giving her social security number to someone.
