September 24th, 2015 I was off to my first Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) site. This would be my first behind the counter experience in a pharmacy. My site location was Walmart located on N. Monroe in Tallahassee Fl. Walmart was founded July 2, 1962 on the belief that having the lowest prices at all times would be the unstoppable force for this company to grow beyond expectations. Not only did Mr. Walton build store on the understanding of bring the best prices to the community but also invest in the employees. Within 5 years, Mr. Walton had already expended to 24 stores. At this point the store was no longer just a retail store, but a supercenter where you could shop for food, clothes and even pick up your prescriptions. …show more content…
I have always been the one in charge and make the calls at work and now I was officially “the new girl”. Many thoughts ran through my head as I entered: “Will the employees be friendly and helpful? Will I be in everyone’s way? What kind of pharmaceutical knowledge do the employees expect for me to know? “I arrived 25 minutes early and saw a technician and the pharmacist inside already at work. They greeted me with welcoming smiles that relieved some of my fears. Brenda, one of the technicians, asked if this had been my first time in a pharmacy and I replied yes. Brenda then proceeded to introduce me to the pharmacist and give me a quick tour of the stock. My heart began to race again. I wanted to ask a thousand questions but was afraid I would sound uninformed. I was taught how to use the scanner, register and the computer. I did not use the register while I was at the store I only filled prescriptions and used the computer for 3 …show more content…
The staff remembered their patients’ names, kids, spouses, and even their jobs sometimes. This environment reminded me of myself and my customers while working as a manager at McDonald’s. The Walmart staff interacted with one another and patients as we did at McDonald’s. We tend to develop a bond with our more frequent customers and treat them like family. The store did not have a very high volume of patients coming in but maintained a constant flow. There was an assembly of patients ranging from all ages, genders, and ethnicities, with a mode of ages in the sixties. Unfortunately, I did not interact with many patients, but 3 that I did have the pleasure of interacting with were very pleasant. I recognized that the patients only reflected the persona the staff presented, which was a smile expressing genuine love for what they do. There were times we did receive irate patients and the employees maintained that same persona of caring and understanding with the patient. Professionalism is the utmost important factor in field when dealing with people, especially face to face. An example of where the professionalism used was during a conflict with the HIPPA Law. The patient called and stated that she was going to sue the company and employees for giving her social security number to someone. The technician listened to her complaint, sympathized with the situation she was going through and explained that

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. “The amount of time a shopper spends in a store depends on how comfortable and enjoyable the experience is” (Underhill, 2009). Waiting on line can be challenging even for the most patient customers. At the CVS pharmacy, while waiting on line you are greeted by one of CVS’s pharmacy techs, who will ask for their name and their prescription and then inform them that the Pharmacist will speak with them soon. They do that to allow customers to feel that their presence is being acknowledged and valued. It’s also done to, sort of, empathize with the customer by making them believe that the pharmacist doesn’t want them to wait any longer than they should.…
