I always believed that interviews were only connected with the attempt to gain a position. Never have I heard of an interview taking place for any other reason. However, after completing my first informational interview, I learned there is much more to gain: connections, knowledge, and perspective. I was able to conduct my informational interview with Matt Smith, Lead Tax Services Director at Deloitte in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In reference to “Informational Interview” created by Eric Brown, my bridge person, Smith’s daughter, assisted me in making the connection to Smith. I chose Matt Smith to be my target person because he is a Certified Public Accountant and works at a Big Four Accounting firm, both of which I would like to pursue after I complete my education. Smith was more than willing to complete this interview with me. With the date set, I began researching accounting, Deloitte globally and the local office, along with Smith himself so that I could prepare …show more content…

Above all, having my name known to a partner at Deloitte in my home city was one of the greatest benefits I received from completing this informational

I interviewed mostly at companies in Albany, including at Farm Family in Glenmont, NY which I interviewed at multiple times for the same position. Then, I interviewed at Senior Healthcare while I was home on Long Island over Easter break. I interviewed with John Reardon, and he explained to me what he was looking for in an intern for the summer. The thing I liked about the way John interviewed me was that it was not the typical interview questions that other employers pose in the first interview like “What’s your biggest weakness” in which a prepared answer is given to the employer. John told me that one of the main purposes for me to get a job with his company would be to “learn the ins and outs of business”.…

For the informational interview I contacted a family friend Rebecca Gray Detling who is an executive sales manager with ICH Global LLC. I first just started off asking Rebecca on what she majored in college, how it prepared her for her job, what courses were the most valuable, and what class she wished she would have taken while in school. While in college Rebecca majored in physical therapy and had a minor in finance because she knew she wanted a future in the business field while helping out people in the medical field. Once out of college though she said that the most valuable class she took was a little of every class because with a career in the medical field, sales, and finance not one class is better than the other but a little of each class was extremely valuable.…
