Personal Narrative: My First Hockey Team

Improved Essays
It had been the longest week after tryouts knowing this team cut me last year. I couldn’t fathom where I would go if I were to be cut once more. It’s Sunday and I’m supposed to receive a call issued from coach tonight. The whole day consisted with false hope whether I would make it or not.
The night came quick when I found myself seated on the dull leather sofa. My father, seated next to me, in a different world with his eyes sunk into the phone’s potential harmonious ring. We both were dependent on the phones’ next move. We didn’t know how long we would have to wait, but as each minute passed I became more and more in doubt. However, I never lost hope until the time finally came.
As time raced before us my eyelids became weighted. Sleep,

The conversation continued as I tried to clear up my shaky voice because I hadn’t put it to use for a while. Throughout the conversation we talked about past hockey seasons and he ended with the most rewarding words in my life.
“Congratulations! Your talent and hard work have earned you a spot on the CCYHA AA02 travel hockey team,” he gladly stated. In shock of what he said I stuttered, “Thank you, I’m exceedingly pleased to play for you coach.” After that I trotted into the room where my father remained graciously snoozing. I gave my dad a pleasant wake up call with a harsh flashlight in the face. He wasn’t delighted with this. Shown by his squinty eyes and slow reaction to getting up. Watching his curled face die down I could tell he needed a minute to adapt to the moment. I couldn’t wait any longer to break the news; I started to blurt out everything in one second. I realized he didn’t capture anything I said so I repeated myself drastically slower for his comprehension.
“I made the team,” my mockingly sluggish voice repeated.
Then I received a satisfying grin from him, so I implied he felt just as excited as I.
“The only reason you made the team, came from the extra work you put in on your own,” my dad assured

On a sweaty, sticky night in the Bird's Nest, Bolt was out of the blocks quicker and opened up an unassailable lead over the first 100m before coming away down the straight and jabbing his thumbs at his chest as he crossed the line. His 19.55 seconds was the fastest in the world this year, his speed and peerless championship class too good for American Gatlin, whose 19.74 was well outside his season's best. Jamaican Bolt, who will also compete in the 4x100m relay, said: "It means a lot to me. "I'm happy to be a 10-time World Championships gold medallist, especially when people have been saying I would lose.…

A loud ring echoed throughout the house and cleared my hazy mind as I lay sprawled out on the couch. My thoughts slowly cleared and I remembered the messages from my phone. Yet another ring awakened me as I realized I had invited company. “Here” the text read. My plans for the night hit me like a sledgehammer to a nail and I sprang from the couch to grab the door.…

When I wake, I go from darkness to the sunshine erupting in my eyes. I feel the need to get up but my body is working slower than my mind this morning. As I manage to lift myself up from my bed, I quickly remember that today is the day Papa leaves for his yearly hunting trip. Leaping to my feet, I dash to make sure he hasn't left yet. I slowly come to a stop when I see him fast asleep on the floor with an empty bottle of liquor placed in his hand.…

It was springtime during the year of 2012, I was just about to start my summer. I was looking on the internet for sports to do in Kaneland, because I wanted to compete at a higher level. But I was not always comfortable with playing on a travel baseball team, but I knew this could be a great opportunity for me, so I took a risk and after all it, payed off. I asked “Dad would you think I would be able to compete and play on the travel baseball team” He smiled “Yes, but one thing I learned when I was young and playing baseball is; it is a game of mistakes, and the only way you can succeed is if you practice over and over to improve.”…

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable. I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively.…

I just wanted to be out on the ice again with my friends doing something I loved and something I have been doing since the age of 4. My mom was contacted by an old coach of mine whose son I played hockey with growing up, Darin Boone. For a year I had been dreaming of a fresh start, where nobody would know about the beginning of last year and here was an opportunity for one.…
