Personal Narrative: My First High School Gymnastics

Improved Essays
After many difficult, time consuming, painstaking hours of practice, it was the day of my first high school gymnastics meet. My team and I had been preparing for this all summer. Our dual against Emporia we were destined to win. Both my mom and my dad had came to watch me show off my hard work and cheer me on. That made me feel great, until it became time for me to compete on beam. Beam has never been my strongest event, but I can still pull off a no-fall routine in competition. As I saluted the judge, my body trembled of nerves as I mounted. Performing the best I could, the routine was going well. As I prepared my full turn, I thought to myself to spot the end of the beam as I wouldn’t fall if I did. Unfortunately, my mind was jumbled and …show more content…
My dad hadn’t showed at my next meet due to other obligations. Who would’ve guessed, I stuck my beam routine with clean execution. That put a true smile on my face as I saluted the judge.
Later that night when I got home, my mom joked that the reason I stuck my beam routine was because my dad wasn’t there. At first we just took it as a joke, but the superstition started to become true. At each meet my father watched, another fall, like cannons going off in The Hunger Games. I didn’t understand why I kept falling, I had great routines in practice. Sure I wobbled sometimes, but rarely did I fail to save myself. “You’re rushing. Slow down, think about your skills, and you’ll do better.” My coach told me.
The night before Newton High’s last ever home gymnastics meet, I was speaking to my parents. “Dad, can you leave the gym when I go on beam? I don’t mean to be rude, it’s just that the competition you didn’t go to, I stuck my beam routine.” He laughed and agreed to my

Once we got to beam, my dad left the gym so he couldn’t see or hear anything going on for my routine. Everything suddenly seemed as if it were going in slow motion. As I was waiting for the judge, I shook the nerves out of my body, and thought to myself, “This might be the last time you will ever do a beam routine at a home meet. Give it everything.”
Saluting with a smile, I mounted on the beam. My first skill was my tuck jump half to another tuck jump half. I stuck it with a little wobble. My switch leap extended well and hit perfectly. I was hesitant on my cartwheel series, but the encouragement from my team helped me stick it. “Here goes my full turn,” I thought to myself. Preparing with a plie, I spotted one of teammates standing at the end of the beam. “Look at her as long as you can.” I told myself. Stepping out of my full turn with my head held high, I had stuck my routine.
Giving my teammates hugs and high fives out of joy for my no-fall routine, I spotted my dad out of the corner of my eye. He was walking back into the gym with an excited look on his face, after looking at my mom, who had two thumbs up and a grin bigger than her face. Having my best personal beam routine all season helped me even more on floor. Our team won with a new record for Newton High, 107.9. From now on, my father leaves the room as I compete on

Reflecting on my years as a member of the Silver Starlites I realize I would not be where I am today if it were not for the influence of my parents, teammates, Starlite parents and my four magnificent coaches, who surprisingly managed to put up with my antics for ten years. It is because of their encouragement and support that I have truly learned what it means to be disciplined, audacious, dedicated, a role model and most importantly a champion. Our competitions came around two and occasionally three times a month, this meant that if I were not home doing my school work I was sure to be in the gym practicing my butt off while my mom repeatedly nagged about how bad my free hand was or that my showmanship and eye contact was not enough, not to mention her eye rolls every time I dropped. It was excruciatingly frustrating to know that it…

“If I were Shannon Miller this would not happen,” I often thought as I positioned my body onto the bar. I hated heights and even being a few feet in the air on the highest uneven bar unsettled me. It seemed as if I were on the peak of a mountain top and my oxygen supply was thinning out. Each exhale made me dizzier and before you know it, I would be climbing down in a hurry, anxious to see my score even though I knew it would be low. I hated the fear I felt about practicing on the bars and how I believed that I would end up like my older teammate Chanel, who recently had surgery on both of her knees due to an awful fall in the last competition.…

The years of high school are some of the most important for many. The events of that brief moment can shape the future of many in unexpected ways, whether it be for better or worse. As a high school student, I have yet to see just how the choices I make even now will shape the future, but I can see them gradually taking root. The studies, classes, and other activities that I have taken have presented a different way to look at the world and increase my knowledge, giving new options for later in life that I may have never considered. One of the most impacting events though, is most likely my time in the VEX Robotics Competition.…

I said excitingly to my coach,”I’m good to go.” My coach answered in reply,”Good.” Then I began to do my stretches while the rest of the team was working on their over-splits. When I was done catching up, we had to work on our bridges and our coach said,” Do two bridges for 30 seconds, ten jump-overs, ten jump to handstands, ten leg-lifts, on both legs, and ten elbow rocks.” After doing that tiredly, for a little these than five minutes, we went to the other side of the floor to do our warm-ups. It was then that I had started worrying even more about my roundoff backhand spring.…

Now since we had three boys, Chris had to be in the center. It was a week until Nationals and I had to learn a new routine. I was moved to the back, had the shakiest stunts, and worst of all, I had to watch someone else shine during a routine that was choreographed for me. There was nothing I could do, so I practiced my new parts every night and learned them like the back of my hand.…

I have participated in the all-star competition cheerleading world since I was a very young girl. Over the last ten years, cheerleading has not only taught me how to stunt, tumble and dance, it has also taught me so many remarkable life lessons, such as leadership, teamwork, determination, and perseverance. One important lesson I have learned over the years is how to overcome failure as well as learning to control the fear of failure. The all-star cheerleading industry is very competitive; one small mistake in a routine can make an incredible impact on the outcome of the competition.…

I never chose to start ice skating.…

Moira, in a previous learning story I documented how you were learning to balance on the balance beam, since then I have provided you with plenty of opportunities to develop this skill further. My goal for you was to be able to walk unaided across the balance beam without holding my hand. I know you can do this as you have amazing gross motor skills, just look at the photos I captured of you whizzing down the pole. I think you just lacked confidence in yourself on this apparatus.…

I was never a sporty kid. For the majority of my childhood, my hobbies have included reading, playing video games, and other generic nerd activities. If you had asked me if I wanted to play a sport, I would have laughed at the prospect, so I surprised even myself when I answered yes to my mother’s inquiry about joining my school’s new flag football team. I worried about it for the weeks leading up to the first practice, but eventually I decided “Why not? It may end up being fun.”…

It began when I was 12 years old. I was 160 lbs and became desperate for a change. One day my friend’s parents invited me to watch an upcoming college tennis match at Berkeley, where the Bears were playing against Stanford. This was my first time watching a tennis match in real life, let alone a professional college match. Walking into the stadium I was immediately confronted with masses of people concentrated onto to this one single court as though their would be some kind of performance.…

Social acceptance is something craved and highly sought after by children and adults alike. The need to feel involved and at peace is something that practically controls our society at it’s current. People jump through hoops to get this feeling for only a minute and I'm no exception. Like many others my age, I play sports and join clubs to feel involved.…
