Personal Narrative: My First Health Class

Improved Essays
What a scary day! I am going to be teaching my first health class to the 9th graders. The topic will be on passive, aggressive, and assertive communication. I arrived at 6:45am to school because I wanted to be sure I would not be late and wanted to be less stressed. When I arrived, I took out my lesson plan and reviewed until Anne arrived. When she arrived, we talked about what today would look like. Our day would entail reviewing with her how I would present my plan to the class, do work in the health office, reviewed with the secretary what I would need her to type for my lesson for the next day, review with Anne and the health teacher after teaching the class. Anne reviewed my lesson plan and asked me to present it to her like I would to the class. She listened to me and gave me some …show more content…
We decided which room the drill would be held. When we got to the room that the drill would be in and the manikin would be planted, the room was empty, so unfortunately I did not meet the teacher. She took me to visit the other classrooms nearby to tell me what their role would be during the drill and to confirm that they had on the wall the drill information by each telephone. After checking out the rooms, we stopped by the main office to speak with Maryann L. to be sure that she was ready to be the operator of the drill. When we spoke with her, we found out that her paperwork needed to be updated. The information that she had showed a lot of marks cross off and things written in other colors as the correct information. She requested a new color for the paper and corrected information about the drill be placed on the paper. This information will be corrected and on Monday, 2/13/17, I will recheck with Maryann L. to be sure she has everything she needs for the drill. What I learned from this, is that no matter how many times you have a drill, checking everything ahead of time is

I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

I went to lunch and came back at 1 pm. I called and asked Jackie the receptionist at that time to let me in. I went upstairs to my desk and Jeff said that we had to go to the hospital because one of the members was recently admitted into the hospital. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to finish the PowerPoint that I haven’t even started yet. I knew that I wasn’t going to do it today as soon as he said that we were going to the hospital because the hospital that we had to go to is a hour away.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

I met with my mentor teacher and showed her the assignment printout indicating my requirements for the class lesson that I needed to conduct in the month of November. She thought it would be a great idea to introduce the new unit cover Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by having the students conduct a webquest to discover information about the Elizabethan Era and the life of Shakespeare and presenting their information using a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation. I asked her if they were familiar with the PowerPoint and Prezi software and she said that they all have used PowerPoint before, but she was not sure about the Prezi. She provided me with a typed page of questions that she had used in past semesters, but she said that I did not have to use…

Personal Health Narrative I honestly was so excited for it to be my eighth grade year. The Savannah trip, semi-formal, and moving on to high school in just one year. I wanted nothing at all to get in my way.…
