Personal Narrative: My First Half Of High School Football

Improved Essays
I’m going to write about my first half of my freshman year of high school football. I was really good in 7th and 8th grade and I tried to push myself really hard to be as good as a high school varsity player and get a starting position. But I wasn’t good enough. I broke my ankle my last second from last game in 8th grade running the ball and got tackled and fell hard on it breaking my tibia and fracturing my fibula and tearing all the ligaments in between. I had surgery on it. They placed a plate and four screws in it to mend the bones back together. I spent almost all summer trying to get my ankle into football playing condition. Stretching it and doing running exercises with it to get my muscle mass back into my leg that I lost from wearing …show more content…
When I could start practicing with pads I started trying to prove myself a varsity player by going my hardest and my fastest. But I obviously still started out as Junior varsity player as running back, defensive end and as the punter. I could run through people really easy as running back and get first downs pretty easy if I wasn’t winded. I also played as defensive end pretty good I could make sacks and make tackles in the back field pretty easily on the junior varsity team. But I wasn’t able to play a full 10 minute quarter game without being winded or out of breath. I was out of shape and I needed to be in shape to even think about playing a varsity down. So I pushed myself at practice trying to finish sprints faster before everyone else in my group. It took a long while to get into shape and I needed to get into shape faster so the day we had practice I’d go home and run and jog to get myself into shape faster. Coach noticed me getting into shape and trying my hardest to get myself a position so I got a chance at kickoff on varsity and I ran hard down the field and made tackles. I rotated at that position for a few varsity

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

As the sun plummets to its end on a Friday evening, in a small town just north of the capital of Texas. Businesses become calm and streets become lifeless, as an entire community packs into a stadium anxious to see their team go into battle versus that week’s opponent. The level of excitement that has been accumulating all week, rings throughout the stadium as everyone longs for the opening kickoff to heal their Friday football fever. As a four year old I wasn’t able to realize that I was witnessing the greatest football team to ever come through Burnet High School, as they demolished every team that was brave enough to step in front of them week after week.…

I was a 3rd string which is the last player to go in if people got hurt and couldn't play. I was also a wide receiver and even without my glasses I would still catch the ball. I was second-string for the wide receiver. Once through half the year we would move people in third, second, and first string and this to give the kids who have improved the chance to play more, well I knew that with my glasses I could kill it and be a first string wider receiver.…

As I walk onto the football field for the first game of the season I feel the cool air rise up my spine. I feel the energy from my team as we form together as one, we stand in the corner of the field ready to run out. Our helmets give off a brand new polish since we haven’t used them that much, they shine in the light giving us a bright glisten of navy blue and white. We huddle around and form a circle, our captains start a chant and we follow. When the announcer announces us we storm onto the field breaking the sign, when I take my first couple steps onto the turf I can feel the individual pieces of rubber start to form around my cleat, it feels like a tempur pedic bed the way my cleats sink in, as I walk onto that field for my first Junior…

high school’s football team. I almost immediately discovered that I had the potential to become significantly better at football than gymnastics, so I quit gymnastics and devoted all of my attention to football. The habits formed by my competitive tendencies significantly propelled my performance in football similar to as they did during my time as a gymnast. Because of my gymnastics background, I was significantly stronger than the majority of other 7th grade football players, so some aspects of the game came very easy to me from the start. In contrast, I quickly realized I needed to focus on many technical aspects of my positions as a linebacker and quarterback because being new to the game caused me to look very awkward sometimes while playing.…

During JV tryouts, we did basic drills to start things off. 3 on 3, running suicides, jump rope, shooting drills, passing drills, etc. I’m not going to sit here and say I was flawless, but I thought I did very well and so did all of my friends and teammates. These tryouts went on for about 3 more days, and at the end of the final tryout, the coach posted the list of who made the team.…
