Personal Narrative: My First Football Career

Improved Essays
I was nine years old the first time I put on football pads. I will be eighteen when I wear them last. Words can’t do justice to describe the journey football has been for me. Nothing in my life, short of the relationship with my dearest family members, has spanned as long as my football career. A single game is a drop in the bucket when looking at a career of over 100 games, but all it takes is one game to show where a player’s character lies. Before the fourth grade, football was nothing more than a pastime, spent with my friends on the schoolyard. That changed the day I had my first football game. I had gone from catching touchdowns during recess to playing offensive guard and defensive tackle. I was no longer with my friends, but with a random group of kids who also shared the same aspirations for gridiron glory as I did. …show more content…
There is always time for another game when playing backyard ball, but on the true gridiron, you have a set number of games, with extras coming at a season of hard work. This isn’t a story of a come behind win or a game lost after a tough dog fight. We lost by over 40 points that day. We were outplayed, outcoached, and outskilled. With 13 players to cover 22 positions, 11 on offense and 11 on defense, we simply did not have a chance against a team of 30 that was in their third season together. By the end, I had never been more exhausted and I looked at my teammates and I could tell none of us could quite grasp what had just happened. We played hard and did what our coaches told us to. Why hadn’t we won? Where was that glory we all strived for? What was the point of practicing? I did not know for a while. We lost another 5 games, losing by a rather large sum in nearly all of

The last inning, we started to fall apart, but we never gave up. No matter what happened we were going to have fun because it was our last time with the amazing coach we had and the last time we would see each other till high school. I think think that this is what helped us win the game because if you don't have a good attitude, things never turn out as you hope they would. But we played our hardest to the end and won that game.…

We came crashing down two games later when we lost our first game in the season. Coach Leake let us have it at practice when we had to do conditioning with the distance runners on the track team. We did it as a team with no complaints because it is the way that teams work even though the players that were strutting around did not play as often as others. After we finished the running coach called the end of practice and gave us a ultimatum. "…

It was well-documented what took place in the next three minutes. After our offense stalled and went three and out, Big Red proceeded to score a touchdown on a 97-yard drive (courtesy of a fake punt), score another touchdown following an onside to make it 14-7, and finally take a 14-point lead after they scored once again following a Creek turnover. Just like that, a 21-point swing knocked all the wind out of our sails. We responded with a two-yard score to make it 21-13, but it was all Big Red from there.…

Jimmy was up (teammate) and he struck out on a bad call by the umpire. We were batting in the bottom of the 7th inning and we felt we could come back and win, because our best hitters were up. That thought ended when the umpires ended the game because they heard thunder and it started to lightly sprinkle. They also didn’t wait because they didn’t want to be playing until 10:00. I started to get tears in my eye, but my coaches said we did not win or lose, because it was never completed.…
