Personal Narrative: My First Experience

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View. After six years of crippling bullying at my old school, my parents had finally decided to send me to the all-girls Catholic school. Although fourth grade was not as bad as the years prior, it was not much better. Even before the age of ten, I had my first encounter with depression and what I later realized to be social anxiety. Even though I was no longer a victim, I was — for lack of a better word — numb. While I met a few people at Bay View, I did not really have friends. For the most part, I spent my time in solitude or at swim practice, one of my only relatively safe havens. There I was comfortable, happy, and worry-free, unlike at school or in my daily life. …show more content…

We originated in a sea town called Morar, and eventually we migrated to Nova Scotia before coming to America four generations ago. My dad, who had dedicated a portion of his life to our lineage, had managed to trace a direct line to the 1400s. So, naturally, being told that we were going to Scotland was a big deal for me as a

It was a cold windy day in late November. It was a typical winter day in Rhode Island. The sky was blue, but the air had a chill to it and you could almost smell the snow arriving. My friends and I stood in a circle lightly bouncing trying to use each others body heat to keep ourselves warm. It has always been our tradition to get to an arena at least an hour before a concert starts and wait for the doors to open.…

“why’d you do that?” I turned around and saw my little sister, rubbing crusties out of the corners of her tired eyes. “When using this formula in modern arithmetic…”, The sluggish slur of the teacher’s monotone voice tirelessly instructed the students on their task at hand. My head pounded like a punching bag, continuously being struck at. The opaque, frosted windows made it difficult to divert my attention from the agonizing lecture. Past these windows, the delicate snowflakes fell peacefully until they met their end, welcoming destruction as if it was a friend of the past. The class in front of my eyes began to blur, eventually drifting into an endless, black surrounding.…

When I was younger, I got to know myself better through performing for others. Participating in dramas really brought out my theatrical side. My Irish heritage has been a central focus of my life for as long as I can remember, dictating the stories I hear, the food I eat, and the way I act. Every one of my ancestors hailed from Ireland on both my mother’s and my father’s sides of the family. My father’s family hails from County Kerry, and my mother’s from Counties Offaly and Mayo. Most of my relatives came to the United States four or five generations back, but my closest connection comes from my maternal grandfather. When his parents came to New York City, they had already met in Ireland, so when my great grandfather left for America to find work, my great grandmother Lucy Finnerty followed him over.…

When my mom asked my sister and I if we wanted to accompany her and two friends on a short trip to their cabin on the lake, we hadn't declined the invitation. I wanted a change in scenery and it wasn't like I had something better to do so we packed our things and met up at my mom's friend's house. They had a lovely spacious one story house with a pool. We loaded everything into the truck and began our two-hour journey. The journey itself wasn't that bad, although I found myself nodding off as I listen to the music on my iPod.…
