My first experience working in a low income community was when I was a sophomore at Georgia State University. I was a member of a Post Readiness Educational Program (PREP). My role at PREP was to go to low income middle schools during the week and help seventh and eighth graders with homework and talk to them about how to prepare for high school and what they will need to do in order to succeed. When helping the students with their homework I realized how incredibly smart they were, yet they had so many outside influences that were a distraction. Some of these distractions included, but were not limited to, family problems, poverty, and issues with peers at school. At times it was difficult for some of the students to focus on their assignments.
