Personal Narrative: My First Duck Hunting

Decent Essays
It was a cold rainy day in december when I went on my first duck hunt. This was the most exciting day of my life. I had been waiting to go on a duck hunt where I get to shoot my gun. We loaded up all of our gear and the dog. My dog was getting old she was 10 on that hunt and that was the first time I got to see her do her job, and that was retrieving waterfowl. When we got to the parking lot we unloaded our gear and started the long walk into the marsh. The blind we had chosen to hunt was a long way from the truck. We had to pack all of our gear for a full day of hunting and that was a lot of things. When we got to the blind my dad and I were both out of breath but the work hadn't even started. We set all of our decoys up and got into the blind.

“Killing the Big One” It was just any ordinary day in January and deer season was in full swing. We had been hunting hard all season and I was still yet to get my first ever deer. I was being patient though and not trying to rush things because even at the sight of deer my heart would start pounding out of my chest! My dad would always remind me “You just have to breath and stay calm then aim at the front shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”…

Duck hunters are still finding it slow in November, but there has been slight improvement in the Public Shooting areas. In the Sacramento Refuge last Saturday, the average of birds per hunter was up to 1.16. This was the highest average in the area. Not very good, but the coming cold weather systems should get more birds moving. In the Los Banos area, the high of 2.3 was at Salt Slough, followed by Gadwall at 1.8, and Merced at 1.6.…

When I went on my first deer hunt I was 10, I shot my first doe with my Savage 243. The doe was fifty yards when I looked down my scope and lined my crosshairs right on the front shoulder. When I pulled the trigger she ran twenty yards, I made a perfect shot on her. We went to pick her up to load her on the four wheeler. She was heavy, but finally got her on the ATV and drove her to the barn.…

The Adrenaline that a hunter feels being in the top of a tree stand waiting for the perfect deer to hunt is absolutely incredible, however hunters are not always lucky enough to find their prey. My dad and I began going around the ranch a day before we went hunting, we looked around to see where the biggest deer’s were located. We tested and align the rifles, to leave everything prepared to go hunting the following day at dawn. We were very positive that we were going to be lucky enough to hunt a big trophy deer, tough the results we had were never crossed our minds.…

It was a brisk fall morning in November. I had woken up extra early just to make sure I could make it out to my stand before the sun would peek above the horizon. I’m not much of a morning person, so waking up can be a difficult challenge for me. Since it was just my first year of deer hunting, my dad had agreed to sit out in the stand with me just incase any trouble came about. I quickly brushed my teeth, got dressed in blaze orange from head to toe, grabbed some snacks, and began the journey out to the stand where I would be sitting for a while.…

My First Deer One brisk 30 degree day in January, when I was nine years old, was a day for which I was extremely excited. My dad got me out of school earlier that day, so we could go deer hunting. I had already shot a turkey the year before, so guns were nothing new to me. We made a quick stop at my house so that we could pick up the .243 youth edition, a really short barreled .243, that my dad had bought just about a month before so that we could go hunting, and I would actually be able to handle the gun. At this point we did not have the hunting land that we do today, so we went to my grandpa’s house and hunted in the clearing of trees behind his house.…
