All of a sudden a chill ran down through me and my hands started to sweat of nervousness as I started to write down the homework. Even its letters in my notebook mocked me as they formed the words, PUBLIC SPEAKING. In elementary school, I loved to participate and share my ideas. When the teacher asked a question I was the first one to raise my hand, but the teacher wanted others to participate and would say, “Is there anyone else that wants to share?” During parent-teacher conference I would always get compliments of my behavior that the teacher would say, “I wish every student in my class was like Jessica.” My confidence took me into sixth grade where I continued to participate because my voice is the instrument that projects the melodies from my head into symphonies that …show more content…

As I walked back to my seat the teacher said, “Good job!” and gave me a smile that made me feel so proud. I received 9.5 out of 10 for my speech! I was surprised, shocked and still couldn’t believe that I actually got this score. I sometimes thought was that really me standing there. After this experience, a flame was ignited inside of me giving me the warmth of confidence that I had once lost, but no longer was that flame as powerful as before. Nevertheless, that flame has lighted a path of determination and challenged myself to take risks and demonstrate that my voice is “like a small boat on the ocean sending big waves into motion” as Rachel Platten sings in her “Fight

When I hear my name being called; a rush of panic runs through my whole body, my heart starts to race, my hands start getting sweaty, and when I opened my mouth not a single word comes out. Public speaking was a challenge because I always feared people would judge me over what I had to say and it became one of my insecurities. During my junior year in high school, I decided to take speech and debate so that I could gain the confidence to speak in front of an audience. I had participate in Redlands East High School Speech Competition where I talked about how we should not judge anyone under any circumstances, using homelessness as an example.…

Prior to middle school, I thought I was satisfied with my position. I had friends, got along with my teachers, excelled in sports, and got decent grades in my classes. Back then, I thought this well-roundedness I sought between these necessities would offer me self-satisfaction. Little did I know, however, that I was going to confront this well-rounded nature of mine during my first awards ceremony in middle school. Among the most intelligent, artistic or athletic of the students present there, I was the one of the few who simply struggled to stand out.…

Besides mumbling “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” once with a class of forty students in elementary school, I had no singing experience. The ladies’ ensemble consisted of four students; Teddi (soprano), Ricole (soprano), Iole (soprano), and I (bass). I enjoyed being the foundation of all the music that we rehearsed and performed together. However, I dreamed of singing a solo by myself, and the state singing competition at Emery High School gave that opportunity. Confidence never deemed to be my strong suite in life, however, achieving a “superior” rank for my solo Danny Boy helped life my spirits.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

That Day in Fourth Grade “People come into our lives for a reason, bringing something you must learn, and we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return. -Glinda” One of my best friends today, Teonna Frye, has influenced a lot of the choices that have made me into who I am today. I was immediately struck with a surge of excitement that carried on throughout the rest of the day. When I got home, I rushed to tell my mother about the flyer. Her response, almost reflexive, was, “Honey, you can’t sing for your life.” To my disappointment, she was right; I was entering the “awkward stage” of young adulthood, and my voice wasn't exactly getting any smoother. However, I didn't let that discourage me.…
