Personal Narrative: My First Day At Buddy Break

Improved Essays
I have been working with children for over ten years and have had many life changing experiences with them. None of those experiences have impacted my life more then what happened to me a year ago. It all happened when a parent came up to me at the school I work at and asked me to be a buddy at a program called Buddy Break. I asked, what is involved, she told me that it involved me having an open mind, warm heart and a little bit of training. With a little bit of convincing I was on board and ready to embark on a new adventure that changed my life. During my first day at Buddy Break, my eyes were opened to a new program called Nathaniel’s Hope, Buddy Break, and I was able to take a leap of faith. The training for Buddy Break consisted …show more content…
When I first arrived, I didn’t know the severity of the kids and didn’t expect having such severely disabled children in the program. When I was reading my VIPs folder, I saw that he was eight and had a mind of a 3-5 year old and he was non-verbal. My mind exploded, I couldn’t figure out how I was supposed to deal with this child in a one-on-one setting. I had a few ideas on what to do with him, but I felt very overwhelmed on my first day. Then, the members of the church asked to pray together before the children arrived. At the time, I had little faith and didn’t go to church, but I bowed my head and somehow the prayers uplifted me. With my greeting sign in my hand, I was shaking. The kids started pouring into the church and at that moment, my heart warmed up. My child was of course last to come in, with both of us visibly nervous, I introduced myself and the day that changed my life began. After the child sat staring at the window without saying a word for about 45 minutes, he held my hand and led me to a bounce house where he held me for about half an hour. Without any words, I connected with a child on a different level that doesn’t need any words to

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. As a member of a club called "The Best Buddies Club", our role as a member of the club was to be assigned a buddy whom suffered physical disabilities for a large majority of their life. Throughout my experience I had met many kids around my age with certain disabilities, and with that I learned about the lives lived by each and everyone of them. A few told me sorrowful stories of a time they were bullied either physically or verbally. It brought great disappointment to humanity as a whole, those kids were one of the sweetest I've ever met. This led our group and I to spread awareness with a motto of "spread the word to end the word", directed at abolishing the use of the word "retard" or as we called it "the r-word".…

The first is that I got baptized in the little kiddie pool on the volleyball court that week. The second though is that I saw my previously agnostic friend Rachel, who at first had only come because her foster parents made her, complete her spiritual journey. That combined with the fact that a kid who’s like a little brother to me did the same an hour before that made the moment heartwarming. That whole week was like…

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

The summer before my junior year, I decided it was finally time to start looking around for my first job. My reasoning was simple; I needed money for a new computer, so I applied at a local grocery store, and landed a job as a bagger. I figured I would save up the money for a new computer and then quit. However, to my surprise, I ended up thoroughly enjoying the responsibility of a real job. Although I was just a bagger, I always gave my full effort with a positive attitude, and as time went on I developed passionate thirst to learn more and more at the store.…
