Personal Narrative: My First Concert

Having minimal background of classical music before starting this class made me a little nervous for attending our first concert. I wasn't sure what to expect. I’ve never really listened to much classical music besides the group, The Piano Guys. However, while attending The Temple for the pipe organ demonstration recitals I was mesmerized. First, I am not from the Kansas City area so I had never heard or saw this Temple before and it was gorgeous. Second, Jan Kraybill played the pipe organ with such passion. She was getting emotional and it almost made me emotional as well. Since she was so into this music it made me feel a deeper connection to it as well. Third, I was so intrigued by those pipe organs! I’m guessing you’ve been there before, and isn't it amazing? The organs were huge. If I remember correctly, the longest pipe was forty feet tall! I definitely was not expecting that before arriving to the Temple! Even the pipes were beautiful. I remember sitting there thinking, “Wow, that’s amazing how these long silver pipes could create such music!” There are over five thousand pipes which all contribute to the overall success of the music. This was another one of my favorite pieces because of the upbeat rhythm and this also reminded me a church songs I sang a long time go during mass. Another reason why I liked this song was because of how well the melody flowed throughout the entire song. I think the pipe organs make the piece sound better because it’s more dramatic and flows together. The speed of this piece was allegro. It was not too fast but overall was perfect the song because Rejoice is suppose to be a happy cheerful beat. It also reminded me of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah we heard from chapter seventeen. Hallelujah is also upbeat and happy tones. When I think about the word rejoice I also think of hallelujah which they can serve as synonyms for one

From the very first song, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the performance despite me not knowing the genre very well. The first song, “Darlin’ Corey”, instantly caught my attention especially from the ‘bright’ banjo picking. The next song, ‘Freight Train’, was a completely different which had a more somber tone. In the beginning, it started very eerie-like until the banjo came in to brighten up the overall tone of the song. One of the notable moments of the whole concert was during the “In the Pines” in the first set, where the ensemble highlights the unlikely instrument, the French Horn.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

The stage lights blared down on my trembling body as I tried to force a smile onto anxious face. The year-end concert had approached and the moment for the audience to be introduced to the elegant melody of Gabriel’s Oboe had finally arrived. The hours spent perfecting my tone, the repetition of phrases to perfect my rhythm, all led up to my hope of performing a faultless solo. As the conductor nodded his head and the the phrase the band behind my played escalated, the first notes spoke from the wooden instrument I grasped in my shivering hands. The F, E, G, A, C, resonated around the auditorium and boomed off the sound beams back into my determined mind.…

What really caught my eye about this group in particular is the houses! It seems like such a good way to really bond with not only your Big, but with some of the other girls in the organization too. I was in band in high school, and I loved having a band little sister. I love how an organization like this takes that aspect of sororities but replaces the negative aspects of sororities with volunteering and academic standards. Additionally, while my high school was in Austin and many people from my school came to UT, I didn’t come with a solid friend group.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. I first gained an interest in music in elementary school music class. After playing recorders and learning about the history of music, I was inspired to learn as many different instruments as possible. I began piano lessons in third grade, and started learning cornet a year later. After many years of attending music camps, playing in school and church bands, joining marching band and drumline, and experimenting on my own, I have grown immensely as a musician. My main instruments are trumpet/cornet, piano, marimba, and ukulele.…
