Personal Narrative: My First Church Leaders

Great Essays
My first church leaders’ interview was with Pastor Joe Gabbard. Pastor Joe is the Family Pastor at Cornerstone Church in Blue Springs, Missouri and has been in full-time ministry for over 14 years. I started the interview asking Pastor Joe in what ways has his work changed over the years He said “I started in student ministry and primarily focused on ministering to the students directly to students: attending school functions, active on campus, visiting and meeting one-on-one, holding youth outreaches, camps, and activities throughout the year. As I’ve developed a broader ministry theme, I’ve continued to implement outreaches and activities, but I focus more on developing a team of leaders who extend the personal touch of ministry to students.”
Since he has changed the focus of his ministry, I asked him what activities or processes have you started doing or stopped doing? Pastor Joe answered “The most important processes that I’ve started, is leadership

Pastor Patrick has been in ministry for 5 years and the Student Pastor at Cornerstone Church for 2 years.
The first question that I asked was in what ways has the work you do changed over the years and what do you do more, less, or differently? He answered “As a youth minister, what I do doesn't change much, but how I do it does. Student culture is always changing and because it is so shaped by technology and media. Students are often drawn to media (music, video), so we use those things to present Jesus. We also facilitate relationships that promote discipleship and growth on a personal level.” I followed up by asking, does media make it easier or more difficult to present Jesus to students? Pastor Patrick explain “media is a tool that we use and so I believe it has become easier to communicate the gospel through sight, sound and not just mere

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

I began my appointment as a quarter time licensed local pastor at Grace United Methodist Church in Tacoma, WA on July 1, 2014. Grace is one of two churches that I oversee day-to-day operations. Grace is also served by Clyde, an African American man in his seventies who was the appointed lay minister for three years before my appointment and now functions as a paid lay leader. In addition, the church rents its second floor that includes a room converted into…

Throughout our time in Foundations with Dr. Cramer, we learned a lot about the view of the future. Our view of the future is important because what we think about the future determines the way we decide to live our lives in the present. One idea about the future that we learned through Dr. Cramer’s teachings and Skye Jethani’s book, “Futureville”, is the myth that is so often taught in Christian society today, that our futures are only important if they are used in ministry. In Futureville, Jethani says, “We have adopted a vision of tomorrow that cannot affirm a Christian’s work in the world outside of the church. Instead, the message of the church being absorbed by so many young people, both explicitly and implicitly, is that ministry is the…

Since he was young, Philip has always wanted to build and put things together. We were able to give him real-life experience as he assisted in deconstructing and rebuilding our pool deck. He has just graduated this year, and is currently participating in a DTS in Texas, with an emphasis on construction.…

Clinton states that the there are five development phases which he has identified as the Five-Phase Generalization Timeline. This timeline consists of: phase one, sovereign foundations, phase two, inner-life growth, phase three, ministry maturing, phase four, life maturing and phase five, convergence. Per his timeline, I would say that I am currently between phase three and four. I have been in ministry since the age of six. Through singing at my church and being invited to many churches in my area, along with being involved in an outreach team that volunteered at many halfway homes is where God begin to lay the foundation for who he desires for me to be in ministry.…

I continued to look for a place to serve more in and help more people but I could not find anything that really interested me. When he asked me to help him along with a few others to grow the student ministry I was ecstatic. He had told us that we were the seven like there were the twelve. I think this is my greatest accomplishment as a leader because even though I was a young student he saw a leader unlike many adults that normally think kids should be put to smaller tasks.…

True and significant life is found in Jesus Christ and because of my firm conviction of this it has been my primary objective to point people to Jesus. Being persuaded that Christ wants Christians and especially those who take leadership roles to minister to the needs of others, I have ordered my life to conform to that conviction. Ultimately, Jesus desires that each Christian serves him by serving others; this is accomplished in a variety of ways – feeding those who are hungry, teaching everyone the life saving Gospel, and by leading in a way that reflects the glory of Christ. It has been my immense pleasure to have had the opportunity to preach God’s Word to thousands of people over the past fifteen years. It is my sincere passion to see people embrace Christ Jesus as their Lord and savior and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds through the Word of God.…

My main goal is to shape young people into disciples filled with Bible knowledge and to help send them out in the world to witness to the unsaved. I plan to do this by combining the discipleship model and the ministry model talked about by Richard R. Dunn in his book, “Reaching A Generation For Christ”. He states that the philosophy of the discipleship model as, “The discipleship model trains students to be God’s people in an ungodly world, equipped with Bible study and prayer skills developed in a caring atmosphere with a view to reproducing their Christian lives in other” (175). This philosophy would be fulfilled by small groups or “trainings” held on a weekly basis. I would like to keep a very close, relational youth group.…

Anytime you are attempting to influence the thinking, actions, or behavior of another, you are engaging in leadership (Blanchard & Hodges, 2003).
