My first band concert Chapter One My concert
I am having a band concert tonight. Yesterday I practiced at E.B Stillman and I am nervous. The stage is so big and I get to sit up there with all the other band players. I play the flute, yes I am a flutist. There are flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, tubas, french horns, snare drums, oboes, a xylophone, and a big drum. I am a nine year old fifth grader. Some little kids might think a flute of a toy flute. But no, this is what a real deal flute would look like. It is a long silver tube with lots of little circles. Those circles would be like the holes in a toy flute. They cover and open the flute’s holes. The flute has three parts. The mouth piece, the body, and the last piece. I don’t know what the middle and last piece are called but a flute has it. I was very nervous for my concert. I thought why was I scared of such a small crowd? Chapter Two Concert Night

For my concert I wore my blue christmas dress with black tights. I wore black high heels and my soft blue shawl to go with my dress. Before we left we had also curled my hair! My heart was pounding as I walked down the hall where I put my instrument case. I

Oh look how brave you are!

As my band teacher signaled Meghan Delong to say the words of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star I got scared. Finally my band teacher stepped onto the platform. She raised her hands and the band started to play. Oh how good I did. I didn’t make one mistake. We were great!

Chapter Four The End

As my band teacher bowed, she told us to follow her off the stage. So we followed her to a corner where the curtains ended while everyone clapped for us! I was very proud of myself. I kind of liked being up on that big stage doing what I know I do best! After we got offstage, I took my flute apart and started putting it away. When I was done I walked over to my family and friends to sit with to watch the older kids

I was filled with joy. Not only had I performed well, but I realized that my fears of facing harsh judgement could be dealt with by the support of my friends and the respect for myself I acquired through that solo performance. Choir gave me the outlet to gain the self-confidence I needed. Friendship made the experience…

Tick, tock, tick, tock… I was next in line to play a part of my solo for a chair order test. Was I going to play well, or was I going to play terrible like before ? I couldn’t believe that I had put myself in this situation. After hours, and hours of practicing my solo, I still felt nervous.…

On Saturday, May 7th, 2016, the University Wind Symphony held a farewell performance in the Meng Concert Hall. Jean Ferrandis, a flute player and Bill Cunliffee, the pianist were two faculty artists of the night’s concert. The performers were elated to show off the songs they have worked hard on as a group. The show consisted of a variety of songs from classical, jazz, and mash ups of popular songs that entertained the audience and represented how well the orchestra worked together to create the night’s goodbye performance of the spring semester. Jean Ferrandis is a French flute soloist who has performed in numerous concerts, recitals, conventions, and events.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

The glowing white light filled the stadium. The seats rose to the stars and the wispy clouds. The knots became tighter in my stomach, as I waited in anticipation of our last show. I flash back to the start of the season, the beginning of band camp. Though it was three months ago, I remember the heat and the pain as if it were yesterday.…

Swimming through the Notes I can remember the day in fifth grade band sitting at the long, gray percussion tables listening to our band director teach “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Staring off into space because I already knew how to play it for a few months, I could vaguely hear Mrs. Tripi’s voice telling the flutes to watch for A flats and reminding the trumpets that B flat is first valve. As I waited patiently for the rest of the band to finally pick up on the well-known melody, I sat thinking of how boring the class was starting to become. I could already read music. I could already play scales, and I could already play multiple percussion rudiments.…

On January 31, 2016, I attended a classical musical concert performed by Chanticleer. The concert was held in the Halton Theater at Central Piedmont Community College. The audience was dressed very casually and most of the people were elderly. This was the first classical concert I have attended, I choose to write about this concert because it’s the one that I liked the most if I had to choose between all the concert that I attended. Chanticleer is a male classical vocal a cappella ensemble comprises twelve men, that include two basses, one baritone, three tenors, and six countertenors (three altos and three sopranos). They mostly know about their interpretations of Renaissance music, but it also performs a wide repertoire of jazz, gospel,…

Sometimes opportunities emerge and before realizing it they’ve changed your life forever. I’ve been a member of my school orchestra for about 8 years now. Every year the band gets the opportunity to travel to Florida for spring break and go to Disney World as well as perform there. For years it's been a band trip that they do every 4 years. Surprisingly during my 10th grade year it was announced that the orchestra would be going on the trip the next year as well.…

It was a Thursday, I walked in the band room being greeted by all my band members that were all excited, I felt the opposite. I was full of anxiety, very spaced out to the world; myself being a senior, being my last year of marching band meant I was high candidate on being chosen to be a band leader. My past drum major look at me and told me “relax, breathe, you will be fine and good luck”. As my ex-drum major step on the podium, she explain how it was one of the best experiences of her life leading this band and it was a great pleasure. I sat there, thinking…breathe, and I turned to the clock.…

This was my first live concert that I’ve ever attended so is was my first time hearing a violin and a cello live.…

The air is electric with excitement; the day is finally here; I am at my first concert, about to experience the band that saved my life. I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household, my mother is an African American convert and my father, a ba’al teshuva, became religious in his twenties. I attended an all-girls Jewish day school on a scholarship from Kindergarten until eighth grade where I was bullied incessantly due to my skin color; furthermore, I was incompetent in my Judaic classes because they were taught in Hebrew; my school expected me to learn it at home and speak it fluently. My educational goals were insignificant in their eyes and since age eleven, I was prepared for the reality that I would become a housewife soon after my high school graduation.…
