Personal Narrative: My First Animal Adoption

One day, my parents finally took my sister and me to a dog shelter, but said we would not adopt a dog. We did not know that that day, we would adopt a friend and a companion. I was in 2nd grade and 6 years old. My sister, Maggie, was 4 years older than me. We had wanted to adopt a dog since we were old enough to know what a dog was. I had pestered my parents to buy a dog for a couple of years by then, but they always said “no.” My sister also pestered my parents as well. They finally agreed to take us to an animal shelter a few weeks later. My sister and I were so excited that we seemed to be glowing with joy. We went to 2 animal shelters that day. My father parked our car and looked to us in the back seat and said “We are just here to play and visit the dogs.” We went in and almost ran to the rooms …show more content…
There were volunteers in a fenced in area playing with the dogs. They were running back and forth, and chasing donated toys and balls. The dogs looked animate with amusement. There were other volunteers taking them on walks and cleaning crates. I knew right then that there was something wonderful about this shelter. I walked around the shelter. I saw a room filled with around 10 cats. In the other direction, there was a room for the dogs. Behind the counter I saw a couple adopting a little Labrador dog. I walked all over with my mother, playing with all the dogs and cats I could play with. When we were strolling around the outside of the building I saw a petite dog called Blaze. He was an adorable Jack Russel terrier, but a little uneasy and hesitant. We were about to leave when my parents started to talk to one of the employees about a dog. I realized that they seemed to be talking about getting one of the dogs! After the miniature debate on the situation, my father walked back outside. A few seconds he came back holding Blaze!
