Personal Narrative: My First Air Force

Before the Air Force I never had a plan and was what most would say a wild child. I didn’t have a clue where I was headed in life and worked a dead end job that would never put me anywhere else but living with my mother until she was tired of me and made me leave. I was always out and partying and just had no sense of direction until one day I had a realization and decided to join the world greatest Air Force. People always said the military changed you, I never ever thought it would change me but boy did it. It was the most awkward silence I had ever been a part of, 52 men on a bus but it was so quiet all you could hear was the bus itself and lots of nervous breathing. It was the most anxious moment in my life just playing through my head what it would be like as soon as that bus stopped and our Military Training Instructor stepped on to “greet” us. For example, we worked sixteen hour days 6 days a week doing the most repetitive and seemingly simple tasks. These tasks include making beds all day getting them perfect and perfect as in no wrinkles what so ever and so tight you could bounce a quarter off of it. Now this may seem easy but what we didn’t know at the time was that no matter how perfect it was it was always going to be wrong. We did it so much our hands ached, if you could imagine how you feel after a hard workout after not working out and taking that from your whole body and just putting that pain into your hands. At the time I was so frustrated and had no idea why they were making us make a bed for hours on end until our hands felt like they had been smashed with a sledge hammer. Along with all of this I was being yelled at all day right in my face it was so bad my ears would ring kind of like after you hear a gun go off or a cannon. It was utter chaos, but after that first four weeks it started the buildup phase and I began to understand
