Personal Narrative: My First Advanced Placement Classes

Improved Essays
The year of ninth grade, when I took my first Advanced Placement classes, was also one of my most frustrating years. In ninth grade, I enrolled in AP Physics and AP Human Geography. During my elementary and junior high career, I was used to not doing as much work to get A's in my classes. I was ignorant to think those same methods would get me through what was essentially a college course. After receiving my first test back in Human Geography, I was petrified to see my first C on a test. Reality had set in, and I was devastated. From then on I struggled. I tried to find a short cut, anything to get an A without working. Eventually, I started asking my peers how they studied and prepared for tests. I attempted to use the flash cards and study …show more content…
I thought that in order to be successful, I needed to follow what colleagues were doing. Laziness and wanting acceptance trapped me in a endless cycle of despair. Almost at the breaking point, I knew I needed to change something. Finally, I sat down, took the time to read the book and make hand written notes. With these notes, I would go to my teacher, ask questions, and genuinely work on deeper understanding. Through this method I found that I didn't need to be like everyone else. Just because my peers used another way of studying, it didn't mean it would work for me, Through this experience I discovered several things about myself. I found that I remember material better when I apply it and discuss it with others. I also learned that I'm a slow learner, it takes time for me to process new content. Fast methods such as a study guide or flash cards wouldn't work with me, I needed to read the material and write it down and take the time to think about it. Ultimately I discovered that I was different from everyone else. I had to work harder in order to be successful in my AP classes. The style of studying that I used worked extraordinarily well. I started to score high B's and

"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence" I have had many ups and downs over the course of my life thus far. One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. When I started high school it was very challenging for me, partially due to the fact that; during this time, I was lazy, unmotivated and did not really take school seriously. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
