Personal Narrative: My Field Experience

Improved Essays
Throughout the second half of this semester, I spent some time doing Homeschool PE once a week to complete my field experience hours. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this experience, but I ended up really enjoying it. As a whole, over the past eight weeks, I learned how to be a more effective teacher. To begin, I found that dealing with a group of students who are a wide variety of ages isn’t always easy. One strategy that worked great in overcoming this challenge was the use of stations. When using this tactic, we would split the students into three or four groups, so that those of similar ages were clumped together. Then, we altered what we did at each station just a little bit, to better meet the needs of the group we had at that particular time. I thought this was an effective method and plan to use it in my future classroom someday. In addition, I learned that flexibility is key. While we always had a lesson plan in place, we never knew what to expect before showing up in the fieldhouse that particular day. Things didn’t always go according to plan, and that’s …show more content…
This task may seem overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to be; all it takes is a 30 second conversation. By asking students about their weekend, favorite part of PE, or plans for the rest of the day, students immediately realize that they have been noticed and feel much more welcomed into the classroom. I saw this unfold firsthand in the students that attended Homeschool PE. They were a great bunch of intelligent students, and I could tell that they felt much more comfortable leaving their mothers’ sides if I greeted them by name and took an interest in their lives. In my own future classroom someday, I will strive to form these personal relationships with all of my students, so I can make each of them feel as if they have an important and special spot in the

First, I should approach everyone with patience, respect, and understanding. No matter what his or her identity is, I should treat the student as an individual instead of a member of groups. I think some good qualities such as honesty, amicability and respect are shared with all human's cultures. No matter what the student's identity is, these qualities are welcome. And it is a good way to approach working with a student of a different identity than mine differently than me might have last week.…

This group of students enjoy group work (I know this based off of my own experiences with them), they don't like reading long texts, and many of them do not enjoy presenting in front of the class. I wanted to have rapport with my students and make sure they had the opportunity to feel positive about the lesson and that it was accommodated to their comfort levels. To accommodate the different students, I used groups in my lesson plans to help students explore the material together. These groups were not randomly selected but instead formed based on previous academic performance. I tried to pair a strong student with and average student and a student who sometimes struggles with applying their knowledge.…

I am an only child meaning my parents were extremely strict and made sure I was within arm’s reach at all times. My friends who had more lenient parents would describe how they would go out alone and it was always a desire of mine to have a sense freedom. Fast-forward to when it was time to go off to college, I decided to live on campus to have a feel of freedom and to become independent since I always felt that a was dependent on my parents. Moving from my home to my dorm was hectic. It was a lot of traveling back and forth because I wanted to make my dorm feel as if I was still at home therefore I brought my whole room to the dorm.…

The term multiculturalism refers to the coexistence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviours, cultural assumptions and values, patterns of thinking, and communication styles. Since being at Munger Hill Elementary I haven’t really seen any accounts of multicultural education occur in the classroom. Even though I have not seen many accounts of this occur in the classroom, there are multiple strategies to be made to enhance the integration of themes of diversity. One activity I can do with my students to bring more diversity into the classroom is that at the beginning of the year I can do a student introduction activity. The idea I came up for this is that the…

Public school should take ideas from Homeschooling because homeschooling has more flexibility and this flexibility allows for better learning. Homeschooling allows a student to make his or her own schedule. Working when it best fits the student and the student’s learning ability. If a student works best at night, he or she can schedule his or her day so as to get his or her school done at night, if the student works best in the morning, he or she can schedule his or her day for that. This flexibility takes the stress of being confined to a room for hours upon hours, away and allows for a sense of relaxation.…

Reflection 8 Establishing trust between students and families can be a difficult task to accomplish. This can be in large part due to the fact parents are so protective of their child, because they want them to be safe. It also can be due to the feelings of being overwhelmed with such an overloaded schedule filled with meetings with teachers, support staff, special needs services, doctors, psychologists, and transition services. In many cases the life of a parent with special needs is much like running a marathon with little or no breaks. Making the parent understand he or she is not alone and you are there for them is important.…

As you can see, my classroom has a lot of space around the desks. I picked this deign because it is very easy for the whole group of students to see the teacher and the front of the room where the whiteboard is. Having space around the desks also allows to form different shapes for different activities. A shape I could switch the desks to would be a “U-shape”. The horseshoe shaped desks allows the teacher to walk around to each students individually if help is needed.…
