The Teacher Who Believed In Me

My most memorable moment, during my early years of school, was my seventh grade English Teacher, Mrs. McCoy. She was by far my favorite teacher ever. She made learning fun and enjoyable due to a very energetic and caring personality. You could tell that she genuinely cared about how well her students did in her class. She always worked with her students that needed extra help with the assignments. And I was definitely one of her students that always needed extra help. English class was never my strong class growing up. I didn’t like to read the assigned books that were always picked for us. In fact, I didn’t like to read at all back then. I didn’t read very fast and I unquestionably didn’t

They all were making comments about how I was in trouble for not doing my homework. She finally told them to stop giving me a hard time. She had something to discuss with me that was none of their concern. After everyone left the room, except me, she turned to me and asked why was I not participating in class? I told her the truth: I was unable to complete the assignment. I didn’t read the chapters the night before. I also told her that after I did my chores and other homework, I simply didn’t have time. My parents didn’t make my education a priority, I would come home from school, do my chores and start dinner. I had to have dinner on the table by the time my dad got home from work. I then had to wake up my mom, she worked third shift, to eat dinner with us. After dinner, I had to clean up the kitchen and do the dishes by hand. Only then I could work on my homework. I also told her about my difficulties with reading and writing reports about what I had read. She asked me to read aloud out of the book we were reading and I did. I read the first two pages out of the story and right then she understood what I was talking about. I was not reading to my grade level at all. I was having a hard time saying words that are standard vocabulary words for a seventh grader. When I had finished reading, she looked at me, smiled and said, “We will get

Shining Library Book Me and classmates were told that we had to do something nice for the school. It wasn’t just our grade, it was the whole middle school who had to something. There were tons of jobs to be done just inside the building. When it was nice out, some of the 8th graders would go out and do the things outside, while the rest of us stayed inside. My job was organizing the bookshelf in the library.…

The most memorable unit from my educational experience occurred in my twelfth grade English class. The unit was a comparative reading about Beowulf and Gilgamesh, which entailed several discussion based lectures and a final paper comparing the archetypes of heroes and characters. For me, this unit was so interesting as we discussed what made a hero and the hero’s journey, during this time I was writing my own book. I connected with this lesson because of my experiences outside school; with this said, a friend of mine who was in the class with me recalls the unit as well. Though, our opinions of it differ.…

Eastview Elementary, which is in Mansfield, Ohio, is where I started my Kindergarten year and finished up to the 3rd grade. However my 2nd grade year was the most frustrating time for me. She was an average height blonde lady with a peal smile and as nice as my grandma.…

Mrs. Winn’s kindergarten class was probably one of my favorite elementary classes because I had my best guy friend, Cameron, in the class, and it was obviously an easy class for me. I remember whenever we colored anything or did any drawings, my teacher would always compliment my coloring abilities because I knew how to color within the lines; all the other kids had scribbles outside of the lines and their drawings would not be as neat as mine. Cameron and another boy named Jordy were my favorite people in the class and the three of us would always hang out together and play outside during recess. Jordy was my favorite until he snitched on me and told the teacher I did something I did not do. He eventually died out of my life because I did…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…
