We’ve seen a lot of schools in the news lately being investigated because of sexual harassment and assault. I hope that we aren’t having a problem with sexual assault, but I know we have a problem with harassment. Sexual harassment can have many detrimental outcomes on the victim such as not wanting to go to class, trouble sleeping, lower grades, and anxiety. (Hill 23). Surely they realize that whoever it is doesn’t want to hop into bed with them after they randomly complimented their butt. So why do they do it? The group Stop Violence Against women claims that, “Sexual harassment is, above all, a manifestation of power relations.” Society tells women that we shouldn’t complain about sexual harassment. That we should be happy someone is showing interest in us even if the comments or stares are unwelcomed. But for a man to comment on these things, our legs, our butts, our boobs, is lowering us to a kind of sexual object. Objects can’t have feelings.
