One day about one month after classes started, I decided to go for a walk before I began my algebra homework. I happened to be wearing my favorite dress at the time, a short gray one that flowed out down my waist and settled on my thighs. I was walking my usual route. From the front of Ratliff, I would walk down the street all the way to Orndorff then turn up the street and go up the stairs to the walkway. From there I would pass the Tech Center and go down the hill and use the back door to enter Ratliff. As I was walking up the stairs to the walkway behind Orndorff, a boy who was a few years older and a little bigger than me stopped me. We’ve seen a lot of schools in the news lately being investigated because of sexual harassment and assault. I hope that we aren’t having a problem with sexual assault, but I know we have a problem with harassment. Sexual harassment can have many detrimental outcomes on the victim such as not wanting to go to class, trouble sleeping, lower grades, and anxiety. (Hill 23). The group Stop Violence Against women claims that, “Sexual harassment is, above all, a manifestation of power relations.” Society tells women that we shouldn’t complain about sexual harassment. That we should be happy someone is showing interest in us even if the comments or stares are unwelcomed. But for a man to comment on these things, our legs, our butts, our boobs, is lowering us to a kind of sexual object. Objects can’t have feelings. Objects can’t become engineers or nurses or psychologists. And an object can’t be better than you either. (Sexual
