Personal Narrative: My Fatigue

Decent Essays
I don’t get embarrassed a lot, but when I do it’s usually because of small things. Most of the time my embarrassment is caused by small things like saying something random and unnecessary when talking to someone. Generally I forget that I felt embarrassed right after the situation takes place so I can’t even remind myself of a specific event like that, but I can remember one time when I’ve got a little bit more embarrassed.
One time I shut my keys on the other side of the door when going out of building that I live in. There was no way for me to open the door an get it because intercom is blocking the entering from the outside for people without a key, which in my case was out of my reach. Only available option was to call a random neighbor

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

At the beginning of the quarter I didn’t know nearly half of what I know now, I thought literacy was the ability to read, write, and have knowledge of writing. I never would have guessed literacy also means knowledge in a specific area. My writing skills have also came a long ways since the beginning of the quarter. I have written 5 papers including this one, and I’m sure the newest is better than the one before.…

I had a similar situation where I felt the workload was too much, causing a lot of stress. I was the only one working the front desk, as well as helping the doctor with patient workouts. The doctor was aware the workload was a lot for one worker, and was in the process of hiring another employee. Even though the job caused a lot of stress, I believe it taught me to multi-task, be efficient, and work under pressure. The best way I deal with stress, is to see it as a challenge.…

I still remember the day like it happened yesterday, the day I broke my ankle. I can still recall the popping sound my bone made when it snapped in two, and the immediate rush of pain that swarmed my body. This was the first time, and hopefully the last, that I’ve ever broken a bone; the incident occurred about five years ago during the summer, and is still one of the most painful moments of my life. I immediately went to visit an orthopedist, who, upon the first examination assured me I wouldn’t need surgery. The orthopedist took X-rays, and of course with my luck, came back ten minutes later and stated, “you definitely need surgery as soon as possible.”…

This summer, I touched that infamous wall. For one week, I experienced many burnout symptoms and a complete exhaustion. Luckily, I was mostly recovered after a long, unusually restful, vacation -- except for sudden, unexpected anxiety and energy drain. This episode left me scared, and very motivated to change my life in order to never encounter a real burnout. With such a motivation, I was very receptive to this course, and what I learned so far widely exceeded my expectations.…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. My experience of stress can be best described as a rollercoaster, steadily climbing and once at the top it can plunge down and back up and to the left and to the right, almost as if the stress is controlling the ride. Stress has changed over the years as well. My early childhood life didn’t include the worry of life, but the concern of self. I grew up as a very shy individual and was constantly scared to talk or speak in many situations. I am not sure how or why I was a shy individual, but it was a big stressor during my early development.…
