Personal Narrative: My Father'spectroscopy

Improved Essays
It was around June that I was accompanying my dad at the hospital for his colonoscopy. My dad asked me to come with so I could be his driver when he was finished. He got placed in a hospital bed and I sat beside him. While we waited for the nurses to come and talk to us I noticed that the room was decently hot which was weird because normally doctors’ offices are freezing.
After waiting a while, we had some nurse come in and talk to dad asking the regular things such as if he changed his address or insurance, while others started to set up machines. There were about five nurses in this tiny room trying to get everything set up. One was asking questions, one was messing with the bed, another was turning on the machine for the IV. So it was

Apparently a nurse thought it was cold in the building so, they asked me if I wanted a heated blanket. I said no thanks but she was already coming my way with the blanket. The nurse put the blanket on me while I just watched everyone walking around this small room. They started to put the IV into my dad’s hand which I thought was different because I’ve never seen them do that so I was watching them. I have never been the type to enjoy watching needles puncturing skin; but I didn’t think anything of it because it wasn’t me having the needle in …show more content…
I felt the need to get up and walk around because my legs were all tingly, but I just sat in my chair. I quickly noticed my whole body was starting to feel tingly. I just sat in the corner bouncing me legs up and down while I continued to watch the needle get put into my dad’s hand. Then for the first time in my life, I passed out. I fell straight forward out of my chair and landed head first on to the concrete floor. I heard a loud squeal and open my eyes and I was on the floor with seven doctors around me asking if I was ok. I’ve never had anything like this happen to me so I was in complete

    Orthopedic Spine Rotation

My ability to learn quickly and anticipate was useful during my spine rotation due to the complicated nature of the procedure and the re-positioning after intubation. Aside from having an arterial line set up in the room, I would often have the ultrasound machine in the room in case the anesthesiologist needed assistance in the place of the arterial line. I frequently insisted that the anesthesiologist put an A-line whenever I was in a room with an orthopedic spine surgeon even when the anesthesiologist felt that one wasn’t necessary because they always requested for one to be placed. They often listened to my insistence to prevent any delays to the start of the case.…

“If you don’t go the hospital you are going to die,” my mom screamed at me in September of my freshman year of high school in an attempt to get me to go to the hospital. I had slept and violently shook the entire ride home from school while riding in my mom’s car. My sleeping and constant shaking, as well as my burning forehead, convinced my mom that I had a high fever. I looked at her and then said, “Okay, if you think I am going to die, I’ll go.” My mom backed the car up in our driveway, and she turned the car around.…

Shortly after my nurse preceptor received report from the night nurse, I overheard an interaction between my preceptor and the internist regarding one of our patients. The physician let my nurse know that our patient required a Foley urgently, she had been retaining fluid for the last 12 hours or more and to his astonishment, no one had noticed. Surely, he thought, either the night nurse on shift or the nephrologist who had visited the patient one day earlier should have questioned why this patient had no urine output. Without time to process why the circumstances transpired, I soon found myself placing my first Foley catheter for this patient. After the adrenaline had worn off and the catheter was firmly in place, I reviewed the patient’s…

Evaluate research for use in nursing practice. The two patients I followed, both had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy with intraoperative cholangiogram and were advised to be NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight before their surgery was supposed to take place. According to the University of Minnesota Health (2016), the new evidenced-based research suggested that the old standard rule of “NPO after midnight,” is unnecessary and the new evidence-based research suggested allowing patients to drink clear liquids until two hours before their surgery; this is the new guidelines suggested by anesthesiologists.…

At the beginning of my rotation in ICU, plenty of concerns started to show up. One of the most popular questions among interns is how to survive an emergency situation successfully without supervision. I must confess that I felt petrified just to think of it. Fortunately, I had always a fellow by my side until that night call shift that I will never forget. It was the case of a young female patient who was discharged 24 hours after a total thyroidectomy.…

This week in clinical, I was assigned a patient with a nasogastric tube. A NG tube is very painful for the patient if it is slightly moved, so I was a little nervous taking care of this patient. I walked into to the room and met with the patient and his wife. I began to ask him questions about his past medical history, his medications, and current state of being. I then took vital signs.…

During my first day shift in SINU, my preceptor nurse helped orient me to the floor. After meeting one patient, we were informed of a new admission that we would be taking care of. I was able to listen to Emergency Department nurse give report to my preceptor over the phone. I had the opportunity to go with the charge nurse to transport the new admission from the Emergency Department to our unit. Upon our arrival back to SINU, we transferred the patient from the stretcher to the bed, performed a bed bath, and changed the patient’s gown.…

I emailed him back saying, “I was just cleared for an extension of my convalescent leave and that I was not fully healed at that moment in time.” He responded back saying, “It doesn’t matter the colonel did not clear you for leave, and he says that there is no medical documents saying you cannot come back.”…

The hospital was fifteen miles away and I closed my eyes to forget about the awfully long time it was taking to get there. Suddenly, tears sprang to my eyes as a searing pain hit me straight in the abdomen. I felt intensely afraid for myself and my unborn child and I briefly wondered if this pain was a fraction of was it felt like to get shot in the stomach. We arrived at the hospital at exactly 5:00 p.m. and I was carried out of the car and placed on a gurney.…

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed.…

This clinical week is by far my most memorable one. I participated in a code blue team response at Med-Surge unit on Monday. At the beginning of my shift that day, I went to see my patient to introduce myself and quickly asses her visually. She seemed weak at the time and sleepy. After briefly reading my patient’s chart, I went to her room again to do my full body assessment.…

It was in 2nd grade when I first rushed to the hospital for an asthma attack. It was my first attack and at the time I do not think I had ever been so scared. Between being loaded into the ambulance, not knowing what was going on, and wondering if I was going to die this experience should have been one of the most traumatic experience of my life, however it was not. Once I got to the hospital they checked me into a room and a doctor came into the room and sat with me as we waited for my parents who had left work frantic to know why I was taken to the hospital. The one thing that I remember most from that experience wasn’t the treatment, or how smart the doctor was but it was the compassion he showed on me: a scared 2nd grader who had never been in…
