Personal Narrative: My Family's Pre-Home Energy

Bernie Sanders said “Every day we are paying more for energy than we should due to poor insulation, inefficient lights, appliances, and heating and cooling equipment - money we could save by investing in energy efficiency”. My family’s pre home energy bill was exactly what Mr. Sanders was saying. They were paying more than they had to due to poorly conserving energy. My FPL bill prior to this project was $210.63, which was normal since it was summertime and the air conditioning unit was always on. The plan initially was that a lot of sacrifices were going to have to be made to lower the bill. I realized though it wasn’t really a sacrifice, but a plan that should be followed not only during this project but after. I had high expectation because a lot of resources were put forth for me to succeed in preserving as much energy as possible. My mindset was that this bill will be cut by 100 dollars. The approximate time that people stay in the shower was 10 to 15 minutes. It really was a challenge to tell them to cut that in half to about 5 minutes. It really was a trial and error period. I had to knock on the door when they had 1 minute left. The hot water was only turned on if it was necessary such as when washing clothes. The washing of clothes also had to be cut. Instead of washing multiple loads, we let the clothes accumulate and wash it together. The hot water was only used if the load was heavy and needed extra cleaning. The same came with using the dryer, the dryer was only used if it was a full load. I took the tip from Professor Pedreshci and FPL and clean the lint filter every time I use the dryer. I learned that if you don’t clean lint filter the air moving though the dryer slows down and the time needed to dry clothes goes up. If the time needed to dry the clothes go up, then the energy wasted goes up and your bill also goes up, so that’s a positive
