Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…
My Family immigrated to the United States when I was just two years old. Growing up in an unknown place surrounded by a foreign language was difficult to say the least, if not for me then for my hardworking parents. This may have not been the most convenient of circumstances being raised in total isolation with no family, but it transformed me into the woman I am today. From this I have been able to appreciate my surroundings more, knowing the things people take for granted in the United States are privileges in other countries. Drivers complain about potholes in the roads, where i think of them as lucky to even have roads.…
My parents came to America through school because where there from colleges are not so great. My parents are from a small place in Africa called Rwanda, it’s a pretty small country and not a lot of people know about it. Well my parents didn’t know each other back in Rwanda but met in America. They came here because they were given the option to come to America paid by the government to take studies and come back. My parents obviously didn’t do that but they got that privilege because they did good in school and over there school shapes your life more than it does here.…
I come from a mixed background; my mother is Italian and my father is African-American, and the two cultures that I have experienced by being mixed have shaped me into the person I am today. My Italian grandparents, or as I call them "Nono and Nona," came to America from Italy for a better life. Their determination to make such a life-changing journey to another country has thus been instilled in me and has made me realize that if you take the path you want in life, it will all work out. My African-American grandmother, or as I call her "Nana," was born in West Virginia then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where my father was born. After many years in Ohio and when my father was young, their family moved to Los Angeles, California.…
Being an immigrant and having arrived at the United States when I was already a teenager, I consider myself to be a disadvantage applicant. My parent came here, like many other immigrants, to work hard in order to give me the opportunity to have a better future. They did everything on their hands so that I could focus on my studies, but the money never seemed to be enough. Thanks to the assistance that the government gave us with food stamps we were able to buy food, however, health care was not as available to us. My parents did not have money to pay for health insurance, and even though my mom is a diabetic, once they took the Medicaid away she was not able to continue her treatment.…
It was a tedious night in the office with a profusion of paperwork, and waiting around for for felonious acts to be committed. So as, just to alleviate the monotony in the small room. I remember the how the ring of the incoming call suffused its way throughout the room until all eyes found the source of it. I couldn’t wait to see what vermin we got to clean off of the streets today, for our moral citizens’ sake. I hoped it wouldn’t be a false plea or a call from an official.…
This gave me the inspiration to work my tail off to have excellent grades so I can make my parents proud. It made me truly realize that anything was possible with a good work ethic and a supportive family. After this experience of my parents dedication to help me and other experiences similar to it, I took my academics into a whole other gear, a mindset that I carry on to this very…
Everyone in America comes from a different background, but only a fraction are the children of immigrants, and an even smaller fraction are the first generation to apply to college. I grew up in quite a different household. My whole family is 100% Lebanese so that means I grew up with a 100% un-American background. My parents left Lebanon a couple years before their first child was born and moved to the United States. They knew that they wanted their future three children to live out of fear and away from all the chaos that was happening in the Middle East at the time.…
Son: I am my parent’s only child. I am their son and I was named after my father. I chose this as the first noun that describes me because I love my parents and I am everything I am today because of them. Student: I am currently a student at Perimeter college and am trying hard to get my associates degree.…
Narrative Essay It was at the beginning of my senior year when my counselor started urging my senior class to start thinking about what universities we wanted to apply to. At the time, I did not know which universities I wanted to apply to or what were the differences between a Cal State, a UC, and a Private University. I did not even know about financial aid. I just knew that I wanted to be the first in my family to attend a University and get a degree.…
Although my mother and I have had countless conversations about her previous life experiences, I was surprised at how much I did not know prior to this interview. I had never thought to ask her about what networks and resources she used to adjust to her new lifestyle in the United States. Our conversation made me realize the importance of friends, family and professionals to shape her as an immigrant parent. Growing up, she was not only a mother but a mentor to me—she supported me endlessly and helped me overcome my challenges as an adolescent. Her story begins with her life in South Korea.…
The Journey Of An Immigrant We all have a common goal in life to better ourselves and progress not to stay stuck in the same place for the rest of your life to have a future. In Mexico is hard to progress when you come from a small house with 6 siblings and a poor upbringing with an alcoholic and abusive mom while dad does everything to feed 8 kids - this why I took to journey to America. He was the youngest out the six his older brother in America doing great his house and a car with money that is all he taught during his childhood. So right After high school with the money he had been saving he bought a coyote august 10 he had to say goodbye to the little ranch that shaped who he has and to his family and friends leaving everything behind…

I was able to experince yearly vacations to Disneyland until I was in my early 20’s. Both my parents’ were very involved with my education and when I played sports. Overall, I can say I had an awesome childhood. I’m not going to say it was a Beaver Cleaver home all the time, but it was a happy home, which provided good morals, and ethics that I would be able to use throughout my life. My parent’s made sure to introduce religion into my life when I was very young.…
