Personal Narrative: My Failing Class At Rice University

Decent Essays
Midway through my first semester at Rice University, I was failing all my classes. Between my parents moving our family across the country two weeks before school began, facing a constant shortage of money due to financial hardships and struggling to form connections at my new school, I failed to fully commit to my studies. Turning my grades around began with reaching out to my father who advised me to commit to an activity I enjoyed outside of my classes. I began taking part in extracurricular activities, revamped my diet and started exercising regularly. I decided to reach out to more people, and created a support group around myself. With these in place, I went back to my studies with a restored focus and raised my grades back up.This experience

During my junior year I experienced failure. I had taken 3 AP classes and I was in cheer at my high school, and trying to figure out a balance between the two was difficult for me because it seemed like cheer took up a lot of my time and in the past other two years it had, but I had managed to still do well in my honors and AP classes. My junior year was another story, I struggled a lot at the beginning of the school year, and most of first semester was spent with me having an F sometimes more than one, and that was a failure to me because I had my heart set on going to a four college or university and I knew that if i had an F i wouldnt qualify.…

Prompt 2 I couldn’t have been prouder on the day I scored horribly on the SAT. Not the official one, but a practice one that was taken in a controlled environment. I knew I could have easily scored higher than the meager score I received that day, but that’s not important. It wasn’t the SAT score I was proud of that day, but rather the significant life transformation that also happened that day in Beijing, China.…

Transcripts Although there were moments of downfall, overall I am proud of the grades I have been able to accomplish over these past four years, taken into consideration that I am student involved in many extra-curricular activities. There have been plenty of times when I have greatly struggled in a class or I could not grasp a specific concept in class. Moments like these greatly discouraged me, and as much as it seemed just easier to give up, I continued to push myself to go the extra mile because I knew the grades I had previously received, were not an accurate measure of what I am capable of. Because of the extra effort I was putting into my work, I began to see positive results, therefore boosting my levels of self-motivation and confidence.…

I worked like a dog, shutting out outside media, no extracurricular activities, all work no play, however even at my highest ability I failed in my mission to bring my grade up to what I assumed it could be. When I understood that trying to elevate that failing class was a dud, I switched to my more powerful or stronger classes to see if they can cover for the mistakes made in another class. In this process, it made a dramatic difference not enough to for me to get my acquired grade. In the end, I had failed my first class ever with a…

As a young child I learned a lot from when I failed at tasks or did something wrong. A lot of what I learned was from watching how my parents acted and what they did in certain tasks. Growing with a twin we often learned and acted off of each other’s actions so when one of us got in trouble or did something wrong it was a learning experience for both of us. All my life I have been natural smart and got good grades without really trying.…

If I have to pick a personal failure in life (thankfully there haven’t been many), I always pick my performance as first year student at Georgia Tech (fall 1995 to fall 1996). It was a fast and almost complete self destruction of what had been the crowning achievement of my young life. From the day I migrated to US (Atlanta) near the end of my 9th grade to my high school graduation, I had a singular purpose—study hard to get into top engineering school (it was always GA Tech for me) and take care of own finances to help the family. I was good at both of these goals.…

“Failed?” With locked eyes, the counselor and I shared sullen expressions, hers with a hint of pity, and mine embodying exhaustion and anger. “I have two summer school periods you can pick from, or you need to repeat your year,” she responded, the pity dissipating and being replaced by a list of government rules. As my gaze fell I replied, “no, I don’t believe I will,” and returned my sight to the counselor’s face, her demeanor growing as confused as it was frustrated. “You won’t be able to get a job without a diploma, Drew,” the bewilderment leaking from her eyes as she spoke.…

Everyone learns and studies differently so in order to really succeed you must find what works for you, and how to keep everything in order. It took me forever to really understand I needed to find my own organization and study tactics. Along with organization the need to use my failures to rise up in my classes really led me to maintain high grades. In my edblog “Failure” I discuss the troubles of failure and how to use it to construct a foundation for school. I find I learn more from failures than excelling grades, because it shows that not everything can be handed to you and that I needed to step up, change what I had been doing, and learn new things in order to help me succeed.…
