The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. ' Work Experience' is when you work just like you would if you were legally an adult except with this program it only lasts a week. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…

I am the oldest child. I have two younger siblings who I love unconditionally, but life as the oldest child is not the picnic most people think it is. I know this probably sounds cliché, becoming who I am because of my siblings, but it is the truth without them I would not be the person I am today. When I was four years old my mother became pregnant with my sister. My sister, Madison was born seven months before I turned five.…

It was a Saturday morning March 17, 1996 I was eight months in my mother’s tummy and my due date was in mid April. Uncle Benito had the crazy idea of going to the snow all because my mother had never seen the snow. My mother told me of a hill she sled down from, a great slope that didn’t leave her feeling to good “No me siento muy bien.” My uncle rushed her to Granada Hills Hospital on the morning of March 19, 1996; I was born seven pounds at eight minutes until eight.…

I discovered my desire to work with children when I started working with the Scouts, YMCA, and a youth treatment center. I knew that I wanted to become a teacher one day while working at the YMCA. I had a coworker ask me, “Josh, what is your secret.” She would go on to ask how I was able to keep several of the older, more rambunctious children on task and out of trouble. At the time, I did not know the answer, and just thought it was some sort of innate gift.…

Aside from any required fieldwork I have previously completed, I have been in numerous positions that have allowed me to work with children. I have been teaching swim lessons to elementary school children for the past three years, and I have also volunteered as a camp councilor at a church camp where I would supervise my camp group and teach a bible lesson once per day. In addition to these examples, this summer I was hired to be a para-educator for special education summer school at BOCES where I worked with eleven middle school students for six weeks. Currently, my confidence is level high as I have been doing well in all of my classes, in track, and I am lucky enough to receive support and be surrounded by positive friends, buy when it comes to public speaking I still can become nervous.…
