Personal Narrative: My Experiences Of Working Small Groups

Improved Essays
Throughout my life, and most recently my high school years, I have had the opportunity to work in many different groups for different purposes. Ranging from multiple project groups, study, and missionary groups, many of my experiences so far have been positive with substantially few negatives.
I have many experiences working small groups, most notably working in an assigned group for a collaborative project. The roles I take vary, depending on the subject. When we are working on a topic that I am familiar with or I am passionate about, I usually appoint myself as a leader. if we are working on a project about a specific topic that I am not so familiar with, I openly accept and implement other individual’s ideas because I want to be leading

When doing group work, I am almost always in charge. For example, I am the leader of my homecoming project group in my marketing class. I am also the leader/captain of my team for the ProStart Culinary Competition that I have participated in junior and senior year. Group A has faced many conflicts throughout the semesters and fortunately the hostility was resolved rather quickly. Each member from the group spoke up about their feelings and was soon followed by a group reflection of the expressed hostility. The group was able to bounce back and continue the therapeutic process with a little more insight. However, with the crises that occurred prior to these last two sessions, it has really taken effect on the group and the way they manage hostility. The here and now process has not been able to progress even with the help of the leader.…

Manage Large Group Times Circle times and large group times takes a lot more effort to guide. It has to have a variety of appealing and short activities. My initial view after reading was an epiphany. Being a toddler teacher, I always felt it was too difficult trying to grab the attention of all my toddlers to sit down for a structured circle time. However, my supervisor insisted.…

My personal leadership philosophy is built on enhancing and growing others, and continuing the process of self-examination and self-improvement. Without a doubt, titles and positions increase the level of influence, but leadership is not necessarily about title or position. Discovering the potentials of others to collaborate and produce the most optimal outcomes with joint efforts is what I consider a successful and effective leadership. Having the ability and opportunity to lead from behind allows a leader to build and maintain positive relationships for fostering a cooperative work environment. As there are many elements to master the leadership development, and theoretical components to compare several styles in leadership studies, I have…

Now that we are all pinching pennies, a lot of people are traveling together with coworkers, friends or family, or perhaps with a tour group. There are times when I enjoy charting the waters on my own and times when I welcome the kindred spirits of fellow travelers on my journeys. If you are new to this type of traveling or if you would just like to make your trips better, there are certain behaviors and attitudes that are different when traveling with a group of two or more people. Here are some suggestions that I have taking note of in my group travels: In order to take care of your own personal needs in this trip, make sure you are realistic and also creative about what you pack. If you know you will not get much privacy or time alone,…

Group work is very different than what I am use to. I am use to working on projects alone and knowing where I stand. I have always been a shy person and have relied on myself for anything I am working on in school. This particular project really brought me out of my comfort zone and showed me it is okay to ask for help. Marvin Wright's Family Literacy Night was different to say the least.…

Today was the day that I had been waiting for, for the entire year. It was something that made me practice and play almost every day just preparing for this, and I knew that victory was within my reach. Quickly changing into my ironed clothes, and eating a soggy bowl of cereal, I raced out into the cold, desolate driveway, waiting for my ride as snowflakes flew around me. Breathing in the cold air nervously, I made sure to have everything on me, as to not forget a thing. Pulling the items out of my backpack, I discovered my small gadget phone, a hearty oatmeal bar, a frozen bottle of water, and a vast amount of quarters that I would use to purchase meatball Subs in between the rounds of play.…

Groupthink is an unintended outcome of cohesion in which the desire for cohesion and agreements takes precedence over critical analysis and discussion. I have experienced this with my best friends in the past and isn’t a good environment specially for friends. There was a moment when we were planning to go to Orlando for vacations, but each one had a different perspective of what to do during our travel. I wanted to do something really different in comparison of my friends and they, too. I was thinking in going to a waterpark while my friend wanted to go to SeaWorld and the other one to visit some place around the city.…

If each lead member in my group did not welcome others’ ideas, I do not think we would had been able to lead the group effectively. After each leader in my group had a topic, we helped each other by brainstorming different ideas, creating activities for each topic. I learned that being a leader does not mean that one knows everything. Leaders have people behind them to help them do their job effectively, without anyone knowing. For me, personally, without the help and support from my group, my presentation would not be that fascinating.…

Lesson 4 mentioned that, “Every group has different basic characteristics and properties. There are norms, different statuses, and sizes of group, cohesiveness and social loafing. The benefit of group decision making is you get more voices and more perspectives. The downfall is when there is a conflict with determining who is in charge.” It also states that, “A group is defined as two or more individuals that is interacting and interdependent, who have come together to achieve particular objectives.”…

Individual Reflection Paper As humans, it is within our inborn nature to interact and cooperate with others. This is due to the fact that no one individual is perfect and capable in all ways. While working in groups, we will experience changes in group dynamics and processes.…
