Personal Narrative: My Experience With Three Rivers Community College

Decent Essays
I joined Three Rivers Community college soon after I graduated from high school. By this time, I have already been assimilated to the American culture. It seemed everything was going as I plannedit. However, I received a bad news from Ethiopia that my mom died of in a car accident. I have lost the most important person in my life. I was devastated. I had a mission from my mom to graduate from college with recognition. I had imagined her to be at my graduation while I was walking the aisle to receive my diploma. I had imagined her face to shine with pride. I found comfort in knowing that she was always with me in sprit. She would want me to realize her dream for me to become a doctor.

As a first time student attending Spokane Falls Community College, I honestly thought that the only buildings and areas of campus involving my class schedule would be of importance. Little did I know that one room I would encounter would become my safe haven. I remember the first day stepping out onto campus and all I saw was a giant riddle waiting to be solved so many parking spaces, buildings, rooms, classes, and students. The anticipation bubbling up inside of me was exciting and rooted with a little nervousness. I was searching for place to keep me focused on my goal of being a successful student, a place to refresh between rigorous lectures.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

When I interviewed with Mount Holyoke College, the Associate Director of the Frances Perkins Scholar program, Nichole Reynolds, shared with me, “Attending this school can be a transformative experience if you allow it to be.” The words that she spoke were the guiding force behind the ways in which I approached my junior year. The 2016-2017 school year has been the most transformative year of my academic life thus far. Indeed, I stepped out of my cocoon and forced myself to stretch; no matter how uncomfortable or the amount of fear that I felt, I pushed towards new experiences that helped to construct the person I was becoming. First, after much consideration, I officially declared my self-design major in Black Geographies with the support of my academic advising team.…

Hamilton took me by surprise. I knew it was a small liberal arts college, but I had no grasp on how unique and genuine the community was. So many people said hi to my tour guide, Emily, as she showed me around -- including the line cook in the dining hall! I also heard how a student emailed 10 alumni to help her with something, and all of them replied to her. This kind of close-knit, loving family is what I want in a college experience.…

All my life, I’ve been aware of the people around me and considered what I could do to make their lives more fortunate. With this interest in mind, I joined the Anti-Bulling Club (ABC) at my school in the 6th grade, eventually becoming ABC president in the 10th grade. As president, my biggest priority was to make my school a place where students were welcomed to engage in discussion unafraid of what might be said; I tried accomplishing this goal by getting volunteers to hold the doors and greet peers to school each morning. Through creating this inviting atmosphere, students participated in more constructive conversation, leading to provoking questions that even teachers could not answer. When I transitioned to community college life in the…
