Personal Narrative: My Experience With The Honors Learning Community

Being part of the Honors learning community at first was solely to get into Spring Hall if I’m being completely honest. I also felt like the people on the floor would be super nerdy, studying all the time, and having no social life. However, my experiences with the Honors community so far have exceeded anything I could have imagined.
First, the people in the Honors community destroyed the stereotype I had in mind for them. It’s filled with a bunch of not only smart students, but social, outgoing people as well. It was quite easy to feel at home with these people, and make friends right away because of goals and attitudes. One of the first weeks Chandler and I, along with some others on our floor, went to target. I don’t remember what we went for, but Chandler any myself both left the store with Razor scooters meant for kids less the 100 pounds. But, we got them anyways and rode around campus, much to the confusion of other students walking on West Pine. This little impulsive purchase led to what I would call a trend, because before when it was warmer, you could always see someone cruising down West Pine on a scooter. Chandler and I started that, don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Without the community of

Louis area. During LC Day of Service I went to Revitalization 2000, which was a program that paid inner city youth to do various yard/grounds work. Some of this money was kept for them in a college fund, which they could access later, helping them pay for a education. We helped this program by digging up weeds, and getting a garden area ready for the winter season. It felt good to help those in need in this area, because by the looks of the worn-down houses, these residents had seen their fair share of hardships. So, lending a hand for this area felt like it could make an impact for the

My School district I’ve been in since halfway through kindergarten has one high school, two junior highs, a couple of middle schools and a variety of elementary schools; the fire trucks for the town have the high school mascot on the side. Small town education is different in the way that honor classes have a set of students that take them, and there is rarely a variation from this set of students in those classes. I saw that many students who did not start honors classes in junior high do not think that they can take these advanced classes, they have become viewed as “elite”. My sophomore year history teacher that year agreed with me that the view needed to be changed, so she sponsored a club we headed named “AP Ambassadors”. “AP Ambassadors”…

Although you have to be 36 years old to legally become the president of the United States, I feel as if I’ve experienced an aspect of presidency in my fourteenth year of living. Of course, it is obvious that being president of my middle school’s National Junior Honor Society is nowhere near being the president of the United States. But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

National Honor Society has helped me develop their four pillars, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, into my daily life. To become a member, a specific GPA is required and maintained, which is more motivation to keep up academic achievement. Additionally, tutoring is a major part of our society, so having a good understanding of the subject you are tutoring in makes sure that you maintain the level of academic achievement the honor society calls for. I have always loved doing service in my community and being a member of the society has grown that passion for me in different ways, I became exposed to tutoring and community clean ups. It even inspired me to create an outreach through my ballet to a senior center.…

My experience at Balfour Collegiate in Regina, Saskatchewan began much like others. In grade nine I wanted nothing more but to be accepted. I was sincerely lucky in the case that Balfour was one of the smaller schools in Regina, so within time I found my place. How I found my place was involving myself. At the grade nine open house almost every other student stressed, “Get involved!…

The National Honor Society is based on four pillars, which are, Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. In some ways, I have already shown three of these pillars in my first two years of high school. However, there are several other ways in which I plan to lead my school, serve my community, and build my character, during my final years of high school. As I have mentioned, there are some ways that I have already shown leadership, service, and built my character during my first two years at Parkway South.…

Every school across the United States places heavy expectations on their select group of honor students; therefore, I will research the ethnographic scene of honor students at Eaton High School. I would like to interview students who grew up taking the most challenging classes possible, such as well known names in our school like Elizabeth Leonard and Adam Richling. I would also like both interviewees to be from different ‘cliques’ in the school. There are various student athletes, music program members, and other students who participate in different activities, but they all hold the same work ethic and achieve top marks. As for artifacts, grades and test grades can be used as well as materials used in class that allow the honor students…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

When first applying to my school’s chapter of the National Honor Society I thought little of it. It was a club that everyone applies to, and something my friends urged me to join. I was unsure if I even wanted to apply until the week before the deadline. Although stressful, I worked hard and was able to fill in the application, and turn in something I was proud of. After turning it in…

My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

High school has been more than a center for academics in my experience, although the first couple years of my high school education started out that way. After being inducted into National Honor Society and getting so much encouragement to involve myself in volunteering, I came to understand how helping others freely can make an impact on the community and even myself. Every day, millions experience hardship; therefore, millions need to help in any way they can. That is why serving others is so important. Even with all the good in the world, there is the same amount of bad.…
