InvestiGators is a research team at the University of Florida that allows students to experience clinical and translational research through direct patient contact and laboratory work involving data analysis. I was a member of the Gator Team, which assessed growth and development of patients exposed to HIV and providing education on living a healthy lifestyle. My duties included creating metabolic assessments, preparing chart rounds for clinic visits, and entering and auditing patient data. I presented a poster at the University of Florida Research Symposium on HIV+ pediatric nutrition management. In addition to my Gator Team duties, I also supervised HIPPA policies and training for members within the lab. My experience with InvestiGators was a time of internal reflection and professional development. Research assistants were required to work 20 hours per week year round. The Gator team would meet with patients weekly to provide nutritional consultations, take skinfold measurements, and obtain a diet recall. We would present to the patient custom education based on their diet recalls from the previous visit. We coached our patients in proper nutrition and encouraged them to meet their goals. I created a “Convenience Food Database” which provided detailed nutrient breakdowns of common snack items to assist in the creation of diet recommendation documents for patients. This experience gave me the opportunity to empower individuals to make independent choices related to health and nutrition. It taught me how to create an atmosphere of trust with patients and foster an engaging healthcare experience. In addition, it allowed me to break through the stigma associated with HIV. Since individuals with HIV are often marginalized, my concern and dedication to them inspired hope for their future health care

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

This team showed great adversity yesterday. Now I know this game should not have been as close as it was and that needs to be fixed. But for this young Buccaneers team to come out and surrender a two score lead and still overcome adversity is an impressive feat and shows growth with this Bucs team. Yes the Bucs should have blown them out, yes the Bucs still suffer from the kicking blues (as of yesterday), yes the Bucs didn't get a sack against a lackluster Giants offensive lineman.…

The flight to Panama was long and bumping as I flew aboard a C-141, this aircraft is no longer in service. As I departed the aircraft, I was met by oppressive heat and humidity. As I looked around my new surroundings, I could not help but think that it looked as if someone had laid a giant green carpet over the landscape. It was definitely the most beautiful country that I had seen and, in my opinion it still is. The tarmac was busy with all kinds of activity going on.…

As the sun plummets to its end on a Friday evening, in a small town just north of the capital of Texas. Businesses become calm and streets become lifeless, as an entire community packs into a stadium anxious to see their team go into battle versus that week’s opponent. The level of excitement that has been accumulating all week, rings throughout the stadium as everyone longs for the opening kickoff to heal their Friday football fever. As a four year old I wasn’t able to realize that I was witnessing the greatest football team to ever come through Burnet High School, as they demolished every team that was brave enough to step in front of them week after week.…
