My manager at the time was happy and sad. She invited me out to her house in Leroy for my going away party. The party carried on for a few hours and I had a few drinks during that time. At the end of the night we said our goodbyes and I got in my SUV to drive home. During the drive home, I was texting and driving,

We figured that my niece would have to see the error of her ways, get help, take classes, go to group therapy sessions, find a job and conquer her case plan. How long could that possibly take six months? The good news was that my sister who is the children’s Grandmother would be there to help us, getting the babies from daycare and coming home to help out while I juggled homework. We had it all planned out. My father, husband and I took turns taking my niece to her court dates and classes.…

I was so shocked as I was taken to be put in the back of the police car to be driven to a local jail by the police after the party. I started trembling on the way unable to process what had happened. Previously I only had spent a few minutes at the party and didn’t realize my friends wanted me to go a party with drugs and alcohol. Upon arrival at the prison there were tall electric fence that surrounded the premises. On the top of the fence I was able to see the vividly sharp barbed wire at the top that was there as extra protection to make sure no one could escape.…

It is 7:23 a.m. on a Thursday morning, the pass allowing tardiness to first hour is tucked away in my tattered blue backpack. I sit in my car gazing at the quiet building. I have seven minutes to make it up the staircase, adorned with two lamp posts. I, along with many others, have visited Morgan Federal, the bank across the street, countless times and never realized just what was in the vicinity. A friend who works next door in the courthouse suggested I profile this place and gave the directions: “It’s in the old jail,” as if that was a common reference automatically understood.…

I have a confession to make, I enjoy the practice of Criminal Defense. As a criminal defense attorney, I represent those charged with a crime, whether it's traffic, DWI/DUI, misdemeanor or felony. As per the explanation I have heard from many people, I defend the 'scum of the earth.' Since deciding this was my area of practice as an attorney, I have heard from friends, family and even total strangers that my chosen profession is 'wrong,' 'despicable,' I've even been told what I do is "what's wrong with America. " I try to have a legitimate discussion with these individuals to explain my decision to practice criminal defense.…

Forty years later and almost everyone involved in that story is dead. My life had been altered by the events and ironically led me down the path of a forensic analyst. My sole job being to preserve blood and other fluids, fingerprints, human tissues, fibers, and weapons-related evidence and examine crime scenes. Simply put, I find out who the bad guys are. The doll - still eyeless, dirt smudged into the petticoat - lies dormant on my mantelpiece.…
