Personal Narrative: My Experience With Senator Rob Portman

Improved Essays
The summer before my junior year, I interned for Senator Rob Portman, which was my first hands-on experience with politics. I spent over 120 hours making phone calls, attending political functions, and talking to voters in Ohio. This experience helped me realize how important it is to delve deeper into the reason behind someone's opinion. During that same summer, I attended the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Camp, which radically changed my leadership style: I finally understood just how important trust, communication, and understanding are in being a good leader. I took what I learned from the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Camp to transition my 4-H club from advisor-led to member-led.

In seventh grade, I was a seventh grade representative and in eighth grade I was president of my school. I knew I had to start off small, so that I could achieve greater heights. In high school, freshmen and sophomore year I was class secretary, junior year I was co-class president, and now I am Senior Class President. I learned from my student government career that it starts off with just a small step to fall deeply in love with something that I spent most of my life with. Student government taught me to take risks by initiating change at school because it starts with me.…

Most know Ronald Reagan best for his acting career and presidency, but not many look back to his past and sees how his leadership roles started early in life; which is where mine starts. Throughout my life, leadership has always been a part of me, I have always strained to help others and try to lead them the right way. Trying my hardest has helped me make a great impact to those around me by showing them what can be done. When I was in eighth grade, a new opportunity was given to my class to take a high school course early, and I decided to be one of the few to go through with it, knowing it would be a lot of work. I started thinking about how this could be a benefit to me.…

Garrett Not only caring about my spiritual being, my Pastor, Ronald Gene Garrett, has really impacted my life as a young man by being an awesome role model. Through leadership, he has always leaded and instructed me down the right paths. As a righteous moral man, he has taught me to be honest in all my dealings, morally-upright, and to help my fellow man in any way possible. Most of all, not having a dad while growing up, he did a fine job filling in, loving me and making me the man I am today.…

During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy.…

    1. Recently, I have been involved in several activities that exemplify leadership. These include renovating the art display case in the vocational building to represent our school’s eagle creed, attending lessons every weekend which indoctrinate leadership skills for students, and joining several extracurricular activities within the school. The most prominent one, however, would be entering high school and seamlessly maintaining and even bettering my grades while in Honors classes.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Personal Statement It was the financial crisis in 2008 that sparked my ever-increasing interest in economics and politics. As I got older and learned about the causes of the financial crisis, I began to question how and why only few experts were able to predict the crisis, causing my initial curiosity and determination to further pursue these subjects. What fascinates me most about economics is its ability to be applied to the real world. The knowledge I obtain in my economics class allows me to actively engage in current affairs.…

Collaboration is the key component to many successful organizations, teams, and practices in our world. Creating a collaborative culture can be defined in many ways. Collaborative cultures are created with a set of goals, managed efficiently, and support team members at every stage in the process. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
