God damn! My stupid googles fogged up again. I reached up to my face to clean the thin piece of plastic protecting my eyes. Did I put these on wrong? No one else seems to have this problem… “Hey student. Get up here and watch this,” beckoned one of the surgeons. My body jolted as I was unexpectedly called upon and I quickly walked toward my mentor, but I also made sure that I kept enough distance to not interfere with the “sterile environment” surrounding the patient. The surgeon who had called me had a partner assisting him. They inserted a plastic rod about a foot long and with a diameter equal in size to a dime, into an incision in the patients left calf. Attached to the rod was a camera which was being projected onto two screens above …show more content…
I returned back to my seat next to my partner and as soon as I sat down, my aching legs thanked me after having to stand for such a long period of time. The heart surgeon started to make an incision in the shape of a square when the horrid smell of burning, human flesh reached my nose. This wasn’t the first time I had experienced this smell, but every time I encountered this scent, it brought an utmost disgust to me. I began to daydream again as it didn’t seem like anything special was happening at the time when all of a sudden, the loud noise of a saw jerked me back to reality, …show more content…
I stood up and weaved my way through the jungle of wires around the room that were connected to the highly valuable machinery. I quietly tried to get the attention of the anesthesiologist working behind the head of the bed, “Excuse me…excuse me. Ummm could I come back here and watch the surgery?” Fortunately for me, the anesthesiologist was very kind and motioned towards me with her hand to come stand directly behind the head of the

"Complications: A Surgeon's Note on an Imperfect Science" is a collection of stories and personal essays written by Dr. Atul Gawande, a surgical resident. Gawande describes his experiences in the field, in learning and interpreting medical mysteries and facing uncertainties, and the philosophical questions he encounters from these experiences. In "Complications," Gawande lays out several ways in which medicine is imperfect and will continue to be imperfect. In Part I "How We Learn," Gawande discusses that medicine will always be prone to errors so long as it is performed by humans. Humans are not perfect, but striving to be perfect requires practice and learning.…

Mr. M.J. was not on any medication and was receiving the colonoscopy for screening due to age. I took his vitals and Mrs. Laura inserted his I.V. He left within five minutes of us working him up. The last pre-operative patient I was able to assist with was 77 year old, R.W, a white female in for a sonography. I am currently reading the memoir, Hot Nights, Cold Steel, Life, Death and Sleepless Nights of a Surgeons first years. This book is a personal account of Dr. Collins, a medical doctor who narrates his years through his surgical orthopedic residency and the physical and emotional roller coaster it took him on in those 4 years. I have chosen this book because I am interested in medicine and I wanted to take a glimpse specifically into the surgical realm. Everyone knows that being a doctor must be taxing on a person for countless reasons, but even more so for a surgeon. A surgeon hands, eyes, and intellect have the power to do remarkable procedures but also horrific damage if even the slightest detail is off balance.…

A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

The medical innovations crafted by the Americans during World War II were more effective at treating and saving soldiers than the practices used before, and significantly changed the way in which medicine is handled during wartime. These various treatments were so effective that many of them are still in use today, whether on the battlefield or in regular, civilian hospitals. After the carnage of World War I, which had just occurred just 21 years before, scientists and those in charge of army tactics began to realize that in order to save lives improvements were necessary. In World War I, an estimated 8,528,831 soldiers were killed (approximately 116,516 being Americans) making this conflict one of the bloodiest wars in the 20th and 21st centuries…

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed.…
