It was a small court room, and the room was filled with all sorts of people. I think there were some that was there for court and some were there to hear someone’s sentencing. There was a banner you could see as you walked in at the front of the room that said” Show up, Be honest, and Try”. I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

For my mentorship paper I chose to speak with an attorney named Margaret G. Zickuhr. Mrs. Zickuhr is a Marquette Graduate and who practices primarily family law out of her firm named Houseman and Feind LLP where she is a partner. I chose to speak with Mrs. Zickuhr for several reasons. Firstly, because of my interest in ADR practices specifically mediation and negotiation, I have begun to look into possibly going into family law. Secondly, being that we are licensed upon graduation in the state of Wisconsin I have considered the idea of staying in the state for a few years before possibly applying for reciprocity in another state later on.…

I have acquired an interest in criminal justice for some time now. I have recently gone through some experiences that have opened my eyes to the many hypocrisies that are ingrained into the criminal justice system. As a child and up until now, I have always thought that the courts were just and law enforcement officers stood for something more, that is not the case to me. I see a lot of corruption and a lot of nonsense, Especially towards minorities.…

My interest in law and government began during my freshman year when I decided to become a member of Teen Court. I’ve always had a thirst for knowledge and I signed up for this activity because I viewed it as an opportunity to gain an insight on how the court system worked and learn about the different roles involved. What I did not expect was to gain a passion about defending or prosecuting a defendant and enjoying the responsibility of informing the judge, jury, and audience about the evidence I had gathered. Before this activity, I would have never envision myself wanting to be a lawyer because I was terrified of public speaking. This fear and anxiety I felt when presenting in front of a group has always been a challenge I struggled to conquer.…
