Personal Narrative: My Experience With Husband's Surgery

Improved Essays
My spouse and I were sitting in the surgery waiting room as my eight-year-old son was having his feet worked on. My spouse remarked on how wonderful and warm, an older (60s) woman was as she passed him coming into the waiting room and said "hi." A specialist came into the waiting room, motioned the woman over, and talked about how her spouse's surgery was going. The woman's outward appearance in a flash transformed from a grinning warm individual to obvious shaken. She started to cry, dried her tears, and endeavored to return a grin all over. My spouse was heart broken for the woman as she was in solitude in the waiting room. He asked me to speak with the woman and check whether we could do anything.

I approached the woman and I could tell instantly from her outward appearance that she would welcome a discussion with me. I inquired as to whether she was all right, and she let us know the specialist said the surgery on her spouse was not going as planned. We talked for a short time and traded stories about each of our circumstances. I helped her make sense of how to dial out on the waiting room telephone to alert relatives, and sat down with my spouse. She later returned and informed us the surgery ended up all right, and that her spouse would be fine. She expressed gratitude toward us for our worry and wished us luck with our son's surgery.

She seems to be very easy going [really? doesn’t she seem pretty tense and resentful?] about the operation she is getting and does not want to talk about it that much. The woman simply agrees with whatever the man says without putting up too much of a fight. Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

Yesterday, Oct 25, 2016, at 2:15p.m. , my soul mate, CMSGT (ret) Elmo Gladden, passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family. His death was due to complications from a second open heart surgery---while all surgeries are a risk, I would surmise to say that open heart surgery is especially risky. However, we did not know such serious complications would occur, thus leading us on a roller coaster ride of despair, hopefulness then doom for seven days.…

About four years ago, I met a woman who could make anyone smile just by talking to them. The first day I volunteered at our local hospital, the director of volunteers put me on the geriatrics unit, playing bingo. The first time I saw her, she came into the room saying hello to everyone, I could see her table was the most sociable. After everyone settled down I started calling numbers until, they started yelling at me to be louder, hold up the cards more, or help them because they dropped one of their pieces on the floor. Until, T.B. decided to speak up and say, “can you stop yelling at the girl it’s her first day, now sweetie go ahead.”…
